OLYMPIA, Wash. -- With chants of "We are one!" and "Put people first!," thousands of union members rallied at the state Capitol Friday, urging lawmakers to spare public programs from deep budget cuts as they seek to address a looming $5 billion deficit.

The Washington State Patrol estimated 7,000 people gathered outside the main legislative building, while labor group leaders put the figure closer to 12,000. Busloads of protesters arrived throughout the morning, most were members of public and private unions from around the state. They congregated on the Capitol steps, where they held speeches, rallied and carried signs.

Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, called it "The biggest demonstration I've seen in years."

House lawmakers plan to vote in the next day or two on a budget proposal that would reduce state spending by $4.4 billion for the 2011-2013 budget cycle. Senate leaders will unveil their own plan next week.

Friday's rally caps several days of boisterous demonstrations in Olympia over proposed spending cuts that labor groups say will place an unfair burden on working families. In each rally this week, activists encouraged lawmakers to target tax loopholes instead of making cuts to education, health and social services.

"I've been doing this for 24 years for the union. It is the worst I've ever seen. I'm concerned that we're going on a race to the bottom," said Tim Welch, Washington Federation of State Employees.  "We have no intention of disrupting business. But we do have an intention of making ourselves known and getting our message across."

Unlike Thursday, Friday's demonstration was peaceful. On Thursday some 500 protesters gathered at the Capitol. The State Patrol escorted 30 protesters out the House of Representatives after they interrupted the proceedings. Troopers arrested 17 demonstrators who were accused of trying to push their way into the governor's office.

And the last two nights, about 20 activists slept on the marble floor in the Capitol rotunda for a sleep-in rally. Their message to lawmakers: Close big business tax loopholes and save programs for the poor and needy.

"So we are going to stay here. We are going to maintain an occupation and a presence in this building for as long as we can," said Mark Taylor-Canfield, protester. "And there are some people willing to be arrested if that's what it takes. But we're hoping that doesn't have to happen."

While the sleep-in protesters left quietly Friday morning, they promised to be back, possibly for another sleep-in Friday night.

"This is an ongoing movement," said one protester.

Yes please increase taxes for the corporations in WA! Then maybe they will bring their business and jobs to Oregon. But then who will fund the excessive compensation packages for the government worker/upper middle class? The unions?

Don't wait for election time to tell them you are going to vote them out and why. I missed the memo on extending drivers licenses to illegals. Revolting. We are being discriminated against in our own country. Free everything for them...bankruptcy for us. Why? So they can get the hispanic vote. By 2015 they may outnumber us in our own country. Oklahoma just found out there are more hispanics than Native Americans there. Since most illegals don't bother to carry car insurance the legislators who voted for this should be libel to be sued by the families they maim and kill on our highways. Why should state workers take cuts in salaries and benefits if the legislators aren't? And to you here so resentful of state workers...why didn't you apply to be a firefighter, a cop, a teacher? Didn't have the qualifications maybe? Didn't want to work your way through school to get them? These folks put their lives on the line every day. What do you risk...getting rear end fatigue?

Big picnic, eh? Wait until Wall Street is finished with us. Your almighty dollar won't be worth its weight in paper and we will all be in the same boat. Your illusion of prosperity is a joke. Don't come to my house looking for water or food.

Washington state is just one big picnic for all these fools wanting more but where will it come from? Sounds like another budget problem where liberals must start paying in before they can take withdrawals. Kind of like a checking account at a bank.

RIVERMAN: The govt's job is to secure borders? 33 million illegal aliens (quote from a former INS agent) tip toed over our borders. Drug tunnels from Mexico to California went for years undiscovered. We spend trillions in three wars in countries that hate us but we are supposed to be broke. Balance the national budget-they just extended operations a whole three weeks! Keep the peace? Gangs run rampant in our cities. Women and children aren't safe on our streets in daylight. Why aren't you outraged by the salaries, free medical, free gas, and other perks our legislators aren't giving up? How about those corporations that pay zip in taxes? As for firefighters LOGIC, they don't just fight fires. Many are volunteers who don't get paid! When I was in a six car pile-up It was EMT firefighters loading us in to ambulances. Do you have a job with their risks? I doubt it. When I left Chicago three firemen fell through a roof and burned to death. Days off didn't matter.

I enjoyed seeing the FIREFIGHTERS demonstrating at the Capitol today. Most of them making over $85,000 a year for working 8 days a month!!! What a disgrace. They don't even put out fires anymore, just surround an drowned!!! Firefighters are worse than even teachers when it comes to holding us hostage for more pay and benefits when they hardly lift a finger!

@forestgirl: its not the governments job to "take care of us". their job is to secure our borders and coastlines, balance the national budget, and keep the peace in our contry. the more you expect them to "take care of us", the more they control us.

Some government jobs are bloated and inefficient. There is lack of accountability on the part of managers and legislators to see things get done efficiently. Not all state workers are lazy. I speak from experience as one for 14 years. My department went through budget cuts every year. When a fellow support staff member left, those of us who remained had to do their job as well with no overtime/no extra pay. Our union took our dues and did nothing! Work weeks included up to 60 hours. I worked in a dangerous environment. If we complained, or got sick on the job we were told we were not team players or a problem. Headquarters added more levels of managers, many of whom were experts at wasting taxpayer funds. Know your facts before you make assumptions. It is your job as taxpayers to hold your legislators accountable. Where is the rainy day fund? Where were they in the Ferry system rip-off? Where are their pay cuts, furloughs and benefit cuts. Keep demonstrating and thanks.

The problem is that none of these demonstrators are taxpayers but are only taxwasters who want more welfare. Why do they have kids if they can't even support themselves.? The State is broke. As the old adage goes: Socialism is great until you run out of other peoples' money.

If unemployment statistics are accurate (fat chance), wouldn't that mean 91% of those people have jobs? If so, on a Friday, are they supposed to be at work? Who is paying for it that they are not? Or is it, yes the "great recession" ended but now a depression began and maybe more like 20% don't have jobs...

OMG, the republicans want children to die, women to die and old people to die ...Wow...You know were out of the "other guy's" money. Look and listen closely, the president of the U.S. is sucking up to the president of G.E. (the company that paid no income tax last year) and who just happened to get HUGE goverment contracts. If you've been alseep for the last 4 years the demercats have had control of congress NOT the republicans. The last two years the democrats have had complete control of congress, plus there manchild has been president. Hard to get off dope once your on it.

mr_conservative said This is what you get when the legislature threatens to cut publicly visible programs while leaving the waste intact......... Well said I agree for the second time with you hey you are getting good! That is correct. Here is a clincher though- the state CAN operate on less than HALF state employees, period. We all, you and I, everyone in Washington state has cut been cut, forced to cut and is being cut from any things-while state government has not been laid off. Waste programs not sewer programs, have not been touched. Why is that? It is time that washington goes to Olympia and fire those clowns, and replace them. We need no more than HALF state workers. Now, when the state lays off half it's payroll- THEN the budget house can come to order. We have been cut, what about them?

A number of businesses have shuttered their doors and laid off thousands since the recession started. Now government is feeling the pinch and needs to be downsized. Those thousands laid off by the private sector did not stand in the street in protest at their former employer's doorstep with demands for their jobs back. They sucked it up filed unemployment and moved on. These folks need to do the same. Their chant of "this is democracy" is right, we elected officials to manage resources responsibly and right now that means cutting some jobs. To those laid off, welcome to life.

A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government. Thomas Jefferson.

However we toss the dice the government is not taking good care of us. Neither are the unions or the women tyrants. We are benefit rich and cash poor which means we have no choice in any matters of our personal lives. We are driven to Planned Parenthood in droves without a dignified choice in healthcare. The governmenet has done nothing to protect families or small business. The problem is not right or left the problem is the government is incompetent.

banditrader? Wake up. The corporations have already moved. Boeing already sourced out! And ENG? Can you really look forward to a society where the schools are so overcrowded and the buildings falling apart, sick people dying in the streets because they have no healthcare, felons running amuck because they were let out early, understaffed police force with broken down vehicles and weapons that jam, garbage pick up once a month, fire response using cracked up hydrants, bridges and roads falling apart due to lack of repair, and the only game in town is the big GE CEO who pays NO taxes, outsourced all the jobs to another country and raked in record profits? Pardon me, but where are all the jobs and starts to the economy since they got our trillions and tax immunity? If one makes $14 billion in profits, what is $2 million in taxes to them when it would do SO much for society AND create jobs for us peasants?!

Obstacle #1, if we overtax our large corporations calling Washington State home, they will move! There are tons of cities and counties in the midwest, rustbelt, and Appalachia with free land and huge tax breaks. We need to cut waste and improve efficiency. Washington's main income is sales and gas tax, what's happening now? Gas is high so people are cutting back and they're not buying as much.

ENG55, Have you considered the fact that maybe at least some of these people don't work a Mon-Fri schedule, may not have had a job to go to at all, or are taking paid time off? I think it wouldn't be hard to find five hundred like-minded Washington State citizens who might fit that bill; particularly in Olympia. The Capitol building is a short bus ride away from some of the colleges in the area, the largest of which is famous (infamous?) for having many activists within its student body whom I could imagine would be eager and willing to stage a demonstration of this sort. I'm also curious as to where your 75% figure comes from. Do you have some sources you could cite to back that percentage up? What 75% of these programs they're proposing suffer cut backs can you list for me? Can you tell me off the top of your head which ones they're wanting to cut funding from?

It amazes me that all these people can afford to take the day off. They all want their program spared and the truth is about 75% of those programs should have never been funded to start with. The Peoples Republic of Washington is in need of a serious regime change. Hopefully in 2012 we will see some serious change in state government and we will get rid of some of the worst liars and promise breakers. In the mean time all of you who have the time and money to drive to Olympia to protest should be paying a bigger share of taxes, obviously you can afford it.
