SEATTLE – Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz made news recently by calling on fellow moguls to stop contributing to politicians. That apparently has some people talking about Schultz as a third party presidential candidate.

According to an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, a group called Americans Elect is looking to add a third party centrist candidate to the 2012 presidential race.

One of the names being thrown out as a possibility is Schultz. Others include New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer and former Sen. Evan Bayh.

Americans Elect is a collection of Republicans, Democrats and independents who have had it with the direction of American politics, according to the op-ed.

The group plans to hold a national primary on the Internet which anyone can join. It will then pick a presidential nominee, and a vice-presidential nominee from a different party. It hopes to have the nominee on the ballot in all 50 states.

While it’s not likely that Americans Elect’s candidate will win, it could draw votes away from Pres. Barack Obama or the Republican nominee.

I think ScottBallard said it the best. WAH WAH sonics, sonics, that would say NOTHING about how he may run the country. I think him selling a failing sports team.. if thats his worst mistake he ever made.. he'd be better off than most the candidates out there for election. But honestly, we ALL KNOW that he would never be elected. So why are you guys all crying about it??? Move on please.

Fellowtraveler, Even if you hated the Sonics and think their leaving town is the best thing to ever happen to Seattle, you still should question the ethics of a man willing to sell out his city for a few extra bucks and get their oldest sports team yanked away. And I'd hardly call Kevin Durant and Russel Westbrook "overpaid prima donna" players.

Howard Schultz is a sell-out who sold his home-town team to a businessman from Oklahoma City and then turned around and said: "well, gee whiz, I didn't know he was going to try and move the team." As one poster said: "I wouldn't trust him to be president of the local PTA."

Now that's funny next thing you'll turn around and find he's sold America to the Chinese.

It's funny how all of these people knock Shultz for divesting his interest in a failing business, but like it or hate it he runs one of the most successful businesses with name brand recognition in the world. *** I am willing to bet that the majority of these same people haven’t the "Nuts and Guts" to start and run a business.

I would rather live in Canada than a country where Howard Schultz were president. He couldn't handle being the Sonics owner because they weren't making profit. How would the b**** run a country that is currently in a financial crisis? I hope evil things on this man.

Not everyone mourns the loss of the Sonics. The Sikma-Slick-"Downtown" team was great and a far cry from today's overpaid prima donna players, so maybe Schultz did us a favor (and maybe he tried to sell to Paul Allen first, for all we know). We could do worse for President and, if we stay with the GOP-Demo Punch-and-Judy show, we will.

See, this is what happens when you surround yourself with "yes" men at the corporate level. You get grandiose ideas about being president. LMAO It says nothing about Schultz considering running. It says a group of voters (aka "we the people") has put his name out there. Given that this is how the original elections were run...I think it's a great idea. I think very few of the people who choose to pursue a nomination are actually fit to receive it.

I 100% agree with the position and goals attributed to Americans Elect; however, the largest problem by far is with Congress, the Supreme Court, and the crooked, unfair, ineffective laws and systems they have colluded with the ultra rich special interests to create. The effectiveness of the Presidency is a much smaller issue. Maybe since it is so much simpler, it is the best starting point to establish the party. If that is the strategy, I will vote for their candidate.

NOOOOOO....he'll sell the US to Mexico only to make a profit. I'd rather sell him to Mexico and call it even.

Howie would sell this great country to Clay(cry baby) Bennett. Then clay would move it to Oklahoma, and Howie wouldn't even apoligize to the great city of Seattle for being such a nuckle head buisness person. BOYCOTT STARBUCKS!

He's an ok guy, but they would look at what he's done.. Perhaps Starbucks has demons in the closet, people keep quiet about until moments like this; of course does anyone think one has his/her price to keep quiet?

I'm sure the coffee lobbyists would love that. We need a leader, not someone who is egocentric. Will someone please step up to the plate and actually help us fix this great country....

I don't think so. I hate that man for what he did to our Sonics. He couldn't do that one thing right. Do you think he's going to be able to run the country? He'll sell the country to someone from South America and next thing you know, The U.S. is moving to South America.

First he needs to make better coffee, then he needs to bring down the price. Then he can think about being president.
