SEATTLE – Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz made news recently by calling on fellow moguls to stop contributing to politicians. That apparently has some people talking about Schultz as a third party presidential candidate.
According to an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, a group called Americans Elect is looking to add a third party centrist candidate to the 2012 presidential race.
One of the names being thrown out as a possibility is Schultz. Others include New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer and former Sen. Evan Bayh.
Americans Elect is a collection of Republicans, Democrats and independents who have had it with the direction of American politics, according to the op-ed.
The group plans to hold a national primary on the Internet which anyone can join. It will then pick a presidential nominee, and a vice-presidential nominee from a different party. It hopes to have the nominee on the ballot in all 50 states.
While it’s not likely that Americans Elect’s candidate will win, it could draw votes away from Pres. Barack Obama or the Republican nominee.
