The Beltway political newspaper POLITICO reports Thursday that Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire may wind up as Secretary of the Interior after President Obama completes an expected Cabinet reshuffle for his second term.
Ken Salazar, the current secretary, has signaled his plan to leave the post.
"That could leave the job open for his deputy, David Hayes," POLITICO says, "but given that the bulk of Interior jurisdiction land is out West, the department’s a natural home for a Westerner former elected official. Among the options: former North Dakota Sen. Byron Dorgan, former Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal and soon-to-be former Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire."
Gregoire was rumored to be in the mix for Commerce Secretary last year when former Washington Gov. Gary Locke was tapped to become U.S. Ambassador to China.
