OLYMPIA, Wash. - Having a burger, fries and Coke could soon help solve the state's budget woes.

As lawmakers learned, they'll have to make up for an estimated $2.6 billion deficit next year, one budget-writer is looking at taxing high-calorie foods.

"There's a lot of question as far as how do you tax fat foods, but it's something we definitely have to look at," said Senator Rodney Tom, D-Medina.

Senator Tom said taxing items such as soda, fast food or desserts could benefit the state in two ways - it would generate revenue, and cause consumers to eat more healthy food.

The idea did not go over very well at the lunch hour at Norma's Burgers in Olympia.

"I think whatever I eat is my business," said Mary Shaw of Rainier, who was picking up burgers and fries for her co-workers.

Norma's owner, Craig Forster, fears taxing his most popular menu items could force him to close. He said the economy has caused business to drop by 50 percent in the last two years.

"They're [customers] just not going to come in at all," said Forster, "They're going to find another source or they're just going to eat at home."

Better than a fat tax.... Change the U.S. Constitution. Add an amendment that requires the government at all levels to maintain a budget surplus of 20 years operating costs and zero debt before any elected/appointed official can be paid. Also require that any pay or other benefits they receive be approved by a yes vote of at least 95% of all registered voters in the locale they represent every year. No exceptions, no ifs, no buts.

Get rid of entitlements, and that will go far to reduce the budget. I'll agree with Jackie2 eat less processed/fast foods, and try veggies and fruit instead. The best 99 cent meal is an apple. Way too many fat people. Just go to Walmart. America at its best.

10 state government has no place in my meal planning. 2) we still have the right to persue happiness and if eating at Dicks me happy, I will. 3) instead of raising taxes, make metro be more responsible with its money..no one even watching the boxes of bus fare money, no one responsible for it. what a joke. 4) make Nickles pay back all the money he use for personal projects, all of it. 5) make the school districts be accountable. I still don't know how the one school district lost a riding mower!? ( how do you lose something that big? ) 6) cut the benefits/goodies of politicians, you all can brown bag it for awhile, everybody else is. If/after you do all that, you should find alot of money you hadn't seen before.

I, a lot of times, have saved money, by eating fast food. And, as was pointed out by some users comments (which are dead-on, by the way), over processed fast and junk foods is often cheaper than healthy foods (which itself is a paradox, or an effort in population control), unfortunately. This guy who put this suggested law forward, probably has some mental deficit in his head. Recently, our national and state governments, have slipped up on a lot of issues; like cutting some of our health care to balance the budget which our loved ones or ourselves need, The tunnel option of the viaduct was voted on, and it was a 'NO', then, both the governor and mayor, signed off on the tunnel option despite OUR voting of "NO", which is starting to tell me that our votes don't really count, and that democracy is dead, The so called "Cash for Clunkers program" (which failed for a lot of people, is in itself a bad joke with no punchline), and now this "Fat Tax". Are you guys really this stupid?

The state of Washington needs to trim their budgets and use the tax money that they are getting more efficiently instead of increasing taxes! If they are unable to do that....then they are incompentant and need to be replaced with better money managers! Every family I know has had to change their spending and use their income more efficiently in this economy. IF WE DO IT....THEY SHOULD HAVE TO DO IT!

Yeah right - don't eat there and put more minimum wage employees out of work. So do they tax the burgers and fries and leave the salads untaxed? Are they going to tax the pies and high calorie foods at safeway? The state of washington chases boeing and other companies out of state then whines and cries because they have no money??? I just gave pink slips to all 50 of my employees (3 million payroll a year) and will be moving my business out of state because of the immorality that has permeated this state and because of washington state makes it impossible to do business here.

This is the biggest, Ok, second biggest pile of B.S. I've heard in a long time. My cigarette taxes have already gone up well over a dollar this year. Thats the biggest B.S. But a fat tax? Come on! That's just stupid. I graduated college this summer, but there are no jobs! So I'm unemployed, broke, with no end in sight! And this jack&ss wants to tax me even more? He/they can go to hell! Or maybe sell off his Mercedes and million dollar home to help. Or maybe he ought to fire half of his staff. That would save money!

Speedracer - you just got another ticket the other day? Have you learned nothing about being a responsible driver? Do you think the laws don't apply to you? We as a society have the right to protect ourselves from people like you. Until we have assurance that you're going to use your driving privileges responsibly, why should we let you back on the road? Stop whining and using your current situation as an excuse. It may not be easy to cope without a car but it's possible. Whether you say you can or you can't, you're always right. You put yourself in this situation, now accept the consequences and deal with it. Prove you can be trusted again and I'll be happy to see your license returned.

Speedracer-- So you have a DUI and tickets, (as in plural) and you want me to care about you no having your license? No way. When you violate the rules of the road you are taking everyone's life in danger. You have a DUI and I have zero sympathey for those that so flagrantly mis-use the privelage of driving. Not only that, but I don't have a car because it's too expensive, and get by just fine, and have for years. Suck it up, you are the one that put yourself in that position. You broke the law and now are crying about the consequences. I for one, am glad you are un-licensed. And anyone who drinks and drives is attempting manslaughter.

This state continues to come up with the most off the wall taxes. We’ve got taxes on cigarettes, supposedly to get people to quit smoking, we’ve got snack taxes (pop, chips and such) supposedly to get people to eat healthier, tax on booze, and the list goes on. What the state doesn’t have is a sustainable budget, or a plan to get there. As more people quit smoking or decide to eat healthier the tax revenue declines. The state keeps coming up with these off the wall ideas instead of facing the problem head on and admitting that the state government is to big. I know, they’re just trying to look out for us all. NOT!

I agree with a "fat tax". Maybe help curb the obesity problem we seem to be having. Or an even better idea in my opinion, would be to give tax breaks to people that are not obese. $1500 or $3000 dollar tax break every year might give people some motivation.

Why don't they tax liquor more or have the politicians take a pay cut? Raising the fines on DUI, wreckless driving, and speeding as well. Now this makes more sense.

2 billion dollar deficit. Hmmm.....4 million people. Hmmmm....Lets just charge $500 for every man, woman and child in the state! But wait, that is a head tax and that is illegal. How can we get $500 from each person? Let's cut out things that are not necessary to get by.

Why don't we just tax anything and everything. I've lived in King County my entire life, and now find, even w/a good job I can't afford to live here. Why don't we put a luxury tax on those new house owners on the eastside? Hey, isn't that where the money always has been? If all this luxury taxing is so great - let's have EVERYONE share their wealth.

Jimd30 That's not the answer, raising fines..I for one have had a dui and speeding tickets etc. currently i am unable to drive,That meens i have no way to get to work,oh wait i don't have a job...The other day i got another ticket while i was on my way home from dropping off a application.I got called later in the day saying i got the job but i would have to drive to Ferndale for a couple weeks, had to turn it down since i'm not suppose to drive.I just want to be a productive member of society but our government and laws are making it impossible for people in my position to find good steady work. Now think of how many people are in similiar situations as I and how many people are not working or not even making an effort to find work,I don't like unemployment it doesn't pay enough to cover basic needs.I am eligible to have my license but I have to pay huge fines, insurance, ignition interlock for years all that while i'm unemployed, makes no sense raising fines that people can't afford!!!!!!!

Senator Rodney Tom is definitely smarter than most of his counterparts. This will not only make people much healthier, but also help pay for some of the much needed healthcare that unhealthy people cost the state. Perhaps we could also tax people on doing dangerous activities like skateboarding, hiking, boating, swimming, etc. We are in a budget deficit, I am willing to give up some rights for the good of this country.

Wow, really? I hope people here realize we have a 2.6 billion dollar deficit and that this tax really is a drop in the bucket. If you don’t want to pay the tax then don’t eat there. How about closing some of the tax loopholes that are out there? How about getting everybody to pay their fair share?

Wow, if this wasn't a case of taxing the poor, what is? Most of the patrons that frequent regular 'fast food' joints are the working class & more 'professionals' go to 'sit down' restaurants where the price per person starts at $40 for the meal only, not to mention an appetizer, wine/beer. Admit it, the dashing lawyer and his trophy wife will not be found at the Golden arches eating Big Macs on a Saturday night. Meals at higher end restaurants are not necessarily more healthy either. Why can't it just be a "restaurant" tax, then the debt will be paid off much quicker. I suppose the politicians don't want their 'hoity toity' restaurants taxed, so they have to give a rason for taxing 'fast food' places only. Will restaurants on private Golf courses be taxed higher? They serve hamburgers & fries I'm pretty sure.

Trying to find a way to TAX THE PUBLIC MORE! Remember,, its about making sure thier pentions are secure, who cares about you, the politicans want their own security at YOUR EXPENSE!!! if there is a budget short fall,,,, FIRE 30% of the STATE MANAGERS!!! Till I see 50000 laid off at the state level and 30% of managers fired and pentions liquidated, I will NEVER support a new tax. wonder what would happen if all merchants just didnt send in thier collected sales tax for a YEAR?????

Ha, I feel that this fat tax would be more hassle and to costly to maintain rather than pay off for the state... I think they should rase the fines on speeding tickets, wreckless driving, DUI's etc..... speeding - 5k wreckless driving 10k DUI - 20k or lifetime of paycheck garnishment... we would have alot of broke drivers...

This is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard of. Get out of our pocket books will you? Where people eat is really none of our governments business. Why not just tax the air we breathe? Tax the grass we walk on. Tax us when we pick our noses. Tax us when we talk. Come on.... how much taxation can we the people handle while you politicians spend, spend, spend? I don't eat hamburgers anyway but we still stop at Burger King sometimes for some fast food. We are senior citizens and money doesn't go very far as it is. Politicians make a heck of a lot more money than we do. Maybe we ought to tax them so we can keep a roof over our heads and just have a life. If we have to learn to live within our meager budgets then surely you politians can too. It is OUR money you are spending and you sure don't give US much say in how it gets spent? Back off.

buying fast food is a "false economy" - it may FEEL like you're buying cheap, but if you bought larger amounts in bulk from Costco or Winco, per meal costs are SO much cheaper than take out... cook at home, that's what the Food Network is for...

I suppose those working in the fast food industry are not already suffering enough being extremely under paid while working in a difficult environment. Perhaps we can add this tax, keep people from going out to eat, diminish the revenue of these establishments and send more people to the unemployment line. At this point it will be time once again for Government to add another tax onto something that ultimately hurts the public much more than it helps. Can we tax people for being politicians? I think this would be a great source of income. Surely this idea has been thought of before since our Government always talks about considering ALL options.

Not reading everyone's comments.. as a single-parent mom raising two kids in the 80's, 90's, 00's.. we most often did McMom's. I couldn't afford to take my kids to McDonald's so we did McMom's - when I fired up the BBQ grilled burgers and baked fries in the oven. Once a month we could do Wendy's. Jr Whoppers sm fries was the Biggest Treat Ever. We also had to drive approx 20 minutes away to have this treat. Always served with milk. From home. It's really not hard to cook balanced meals at a reasonable price from home. Even if it's grilling burgers (mom determines fat content of burger.) As long as it's not a daily thing. Mac and cheese (with tuna and veggies added) with veggie side dish... I've been there. I fully support a "fat tax" because fast food shouldn't be a daily thing. It should be the "once a month TREAT" thing. Scrambled eggs with veggies should be an option before Mc"Whatever's." I've been there with and without food stamps. Focus on quality vs quantity.
