When the campaigns for Washington governor close their books next week, the race will have topped $40 million -- counting the money raised by the Inslee and McKenna campaigns and the independent expenditures by outside groups.

Republican Rob McKenna raised $23 million, while Democat Jay Inslee raised $21 million.

The campaigns for the four initiatives on this year's ballot have raised $35 million, with the approve campaigns for R-74 (same-sex marriage) and I-1240 (charter schools) each spending more than $10 million.

Voter registration

Washington set a new record for voter registration this year. There are 3.9 million people registered to vote in the state, an increase of 300,000 from 2008.

More than 1.1 million people in King County are registered, compared with 442,000 in Pierce County and 415,000 in Snohomish County.
