SEATTLE – Playing out like a poker game, Billionaire Warren Buffett and the Republican leader in the U.S. Senate are calling each others’ bluffs over raising taxes on the wealthy.

Last August, Buffett insisted the "mega-rich" should be taxed more, citing that his secretary pays a higher percentage in taxes than he does.

Republican members of Congress upped the ante. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell suggested Buffett should offer to make a donation. A bill was introduced last year that would put the option on tax forms for people to donate additional money to pay off the debt.

Now, in an interview with Time Magazine, Buffett says he’ll agree to the extra donation if GOP members of Congress do the same. Buffett is pledging to match their additional contributions, dollar-for-dollar, and that he’ll pay $3 for every $1 Sen. McConnell donates.

A spokesperson for the senator said McConnell would like to see Buffett extend his one-for-one offer to include others, including Congressional Democrats and Pres. Obama.

Dear Mr. Warren Buffett, the $1,000 Trillion in unfunded liabilities for the Federal Government was from auditing OPM, Fed. Civilian Unfunded Pension $1.6 Trillion, Fed. Civilian Unfunded Healthcare $355 Trillion, Fed. Civilian Disability Unfunded $21.8 Trillion, Military Pension Unfunded $1.3 Trillion, Military Retiree Healthcare Unfunded $905 Trillion, Vet. Disability Pension unfunded $1.5 Trillion. These numbers are based Net Present Value with 8% investment growth and 4% GDP for $1,000 benefits payout in the future. If you put in the real economic returns of 2%-4% Int and 2% GDP these numbers explodes to even larger unfunded numbers. What do you do with ill-responsible financial people in your business organization? Do you actually think taxation is going to fix this fiscal mess or do you think people need to pay for their own benefits from their base salary in their own accounts?

So you think you are rich enough to allow government to operate unbridled running up debt, deficits and raiding children's education trust funds? Take a look at Washington State, $70 Billion debt (Debt Affordability Study Treasurer McIntire), $24.1 Billion Unfunded Liabilities (Auditor Sonntag) that's $94.1 Billion in unpaid bills. 2011 Sine Die the legislature raided the Children's education trust fund GET for $2 Billion at 15%, they now owe between $300 million to $500 million in interest for 2010 and 2011. Mr. Warren Buffett, what do you do with people who operate with such financial misconduct in your business empire? The person's name who raided the Children's GET trust fund is Ross Hunter! What would you do with a person like him?

Now if Warren really thought the feds were such fine stewards of our hard earned money, he would not have set up a series of elaborate trusts and charitable foundations to reduce his federal taxable estate upon his death to next to zero. So Warren, just shut up and go home and play bridge with your buddy Bill Gates. We don't need any more motormouth rich liberals whining why everyone else's taxes should go up.

Mr. Warren Buffett, the unpaid bill is not $1 dollar. It's $117 Trillion in unfunded liabilities in SSI, Prescription Drug, and Medicare. It's another $1,000 Trillion in unfunded liabilities for the Federal Government workers and retirees. Let us not forget the $15 Trillion in annual unpaid bills. Not $1 Dollar. It seems to me you are too eager to have people pay more taxes, what have you invested in that require tax payer to pay more, have you bet the wrong direction in interest rates or possibility of default? Like what happen in May to Aug 2011 when treasury defaulted on payment to FERS, CSRDF and other federal retirement plans invested in treasuries? (Source GAO-12-164)

All one needs to do is read posts from the likes of jackwong, and flintone, to get a prime glimpse of the ignoramus that is liberalism. Probably very decent people, just seriously misguided in this arena of thought.

@jackwong: You seem to imply that rich people are mostly republicans, which is pretty absurd. Is Warren Buffet the only rich democrat you can think of? Most of the wealthy people I know are democrats, for what it's worth.

Mr Buffet must be looking for a nice way of saying that your retired grand parents or parents need to have their taxes raised as well. Question, where does nearly every cent of Mr. Buffet's money come from? INVESTMENTS. He does not make virtually any of his money from income from a job. Furthermore he can lower his taxable income even more just by changing what he invests in. Oh and I love reading the comment about how Mr. Buffet is donating 99 percent of his money to charity like it makes him so much above regular rich people. Donating to charity is a WONDERFULLY philanthropic gesture. But it is not the same as giving even more of his money DIRECTLY to the government in TAXES.

@saynotolibs, In 2006 Buffet donated X number of his own shares of Berkshire Hathaway (which were worth about 30 Billion at the time) to BMGF. They receive 5% of that amount annually, so whatever the number might be today...

Kudos to Mr. Buffet for shutting up all those idiot Republicans for their nonsense. The rich have oppressed the middle class for way too long... It's nice to have a rich guy on OUR side for once. I also give kudos to President Obama for bringing Mr. Buffet in to our side. Once President Obama whoops Romney on 2012, it's going to be free healthcare.

c8lsonics, you're a loon. And obviously not a very bright one. In 2006 Buffet pledged to give away 99% of his wealth to charities. And he has been delivering on his pledge ever since. He donated about 30 Billion of his own money to Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. I know this is not the kind of information you would hear on your favorite channel - FOX news, so your ignorance is excused.

I admire Mr. Buffett for standing up and trying to help end the insanity. As folks rant and rave about liberals, they need to think back to the tax rates of great republicans like Reagan and Eisenhower and look at the positive lifestyle of Americans that was afforded by their decisions. My uncle is a 1% and he has always bragged about his lack of tax liability due to his loop holes. God bless him, but the middle class needs some help here to keep this nation great. Otherwise, we are sinking to the level of all third world economies......

Buffet is a loon. " I will only do something if someone else does something." He won't "donate" any more than what is forced from him from the IRS. "Use everyone else's money except mine." Typical liberal. To say that the offer is only to the GOP side means nothing. All politicians, including the democraps spent us into oblivion!

If Buffett really wanted to help the debt, he would just do it. Otherwise, it is just grandstanding! He is trying to make the GOP look bad, for purely political reasons.
