KIRKLAND, Wash. - A Kirkland property owner is trying to figure out what killed two of her goats last night. And now the state is investigating.
The property runs along Denny Creek near Juanita Drive in unicorporated King County.
"This is Larry, and he was actually in the water with his head out of the water," says the property owner, Tamera Kesterson.
The two goats were found lying by the creek last night.
"That's Curly," she says. "They all have collars with name tags and everything just like my dogs."
Kesterson says they were sweet docile animals that were like pets to her.
"I can bring the truck in and open the door and they'll jump in the truck. Like 'Let's go for a ride.'"
Kesterson immediately removed four other goats from the property that straddles Denny Creek. She said she noticed something different about the water.
"Last night you couldn't see through, nothing. It was white and murky. I've had this property for four months and it's never done this," says Kesterson.
The state's Department of Ecology came out to investigate. So far, a sample of the water revealed the pH balance is normal. Plus other wildlife don't seem to be bothered.
But with the creek running through unincorporated King County and out to Lake Washington, the state wants to find the cause. Agriculture experts have already ordered necropsies on the goats.
The state has to consider other possible variables. Another issue could be the grain. Kesterson says she opened a new bag just a few days ago.
"We tried to move them to make sure they weren't shot or coyotes had gotten them, but nothing," she said.
At least one of the other goats appears sick as well. Some living near the creek are concerned animals or children playing there could also be at risk.
