A Woodinville animal shelter is offering free dog and cat microchips ahead of the 4th of July holiday.

Homeward Pet Dunmire Veterinary Clinic is offering the service Thursday 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. while supplies last. The animals must be spayed or neutered to qualify. The address is 13132 NE 177th Place in Woodinville.

Homeward Pet says more runaway and lost pets end up in animal shelters on the 4th of July than any other time of the year. Due to fireworks , pets can become scared and have been known to escape and run away, even from places where they are enclosed or leashed.

“When in distress, pets can run incredibly long distances, may lose their sense of direction and end up far from home,” says Homeward Pet.
