SURRY CO -- Michael Vick's former Surry County home, once used for dog fighting home, could become a sanctuary for abused animals.

The group Dogs Deserve Better is using Facebook to get donations and support to turn the 15-acre property into an animal rehab center.

Its page is called 999,999 Friends for the Good Newz Rehab Center for Chained Dogs.   If asks 999,999 people to give $1.00 so the non-profit group can buy Vick's old home.

The group has until March 20 to raise at least $600,000 to purchase the property.

Members say they'd need an estimated $3 million to create the dog center. The house would become an office, fundraising center and store.

Rainbow Animal Rescue of Norfolk supports the effort.   The small group of volunteers helps abused and neglected dogs.

“Hundreds of animals need assistance, but we can reach only a handful.  A full-scale rehab center would save dogs that would otherwise be euthanized,” director Esther Williams said.

If successful, organizers would build a fence around the property and have a monitoring system.

Dogs Deserve Better is a non-profit based in Tipton, Pennsylvania with more than 100 representatives nationwide.   Foster home volunteers rescue and rehabilitate about 400-600 dogs each year, according to the group.
