PORTLAND – The six monkeys that died while in quarantine at the Oregon Zoo in May were found dead inside plastic coolers, according to a Willamette Week report.

The report said zoo documents showed that nine cotton-top tamarin monkeys had been traveling for at least 50 hours in a van before arriving at the zoo.

Six of them died two days later in quarantine at the zoo’s veterinary center, while in plastic coolers with holes.

The report also said the zoo’s curator of primates was accused of neglecting to help the three surviving monkeys.

The surviving monkeys, including a seven-week-old baby, remain under the zoo’s care.
