A Pierce County man was sentenced to six months in jail for attacking a dog with a hatchet.
Prosecutors say in March, Ricky Knowles used treats to lure the neighbor's Golden retriever into his garage, where he beat the dog and tried to strangle him with wire.
The dog barely survived, suffering multiple fractures to his head and neck.
The dog's owner said Knowles had complained about barking.
Knowles will serve six months on electronic home monitoring following his release from jail. He was also ordered to pay nearly $5,000 in restitution and is prohibited from owning or residing with any animals.
The Seattle Humane Society applauded the sentence of six months in jail.
“Animal cruelty is a horrible crime and often a precursor to other acts of violence,” said Seattle Humane CEO David Loewe. “It is important that anyone guilty of harming or injuring animals be held fully accountable for their actions.”
