SEATTLE - Former game show host and long-time animal rights activist Bob Barker narrates the undercover video reportedly taken at an Ohio farm which supplies veal to Costco and other stores.

The video, shown simultaneously to reporters in Seattle and other cities, shows calves tethered by chains in small wooden pens.

"This confinement is so extreme," says Barker in the video, "that the calves can't even turn around or lie down comfortably."

The video also shows calves covered in what Barker describes as their own waste and includes pictures from a separate facility where newborn male cows are snatched from their dairy cow mothers and whisked off to pens to become veal.

Groups, like Barker's Mercy for Animals, will release tapes like this to raise donations and shock consumers. And while it can have a dramatic effect on some consumers, it rarely forces immediate changes by farms and store outlets. But this time, Costco acted swiftly.

A spokesman told KING 5 the company  will not buy veal from this farm or any other engaged in tethering techniques. A statement released by Costco CEO James Sinegal late this afternoon also shouldered some of the blame.

The statement read in part, "We are extremely disappointed not only with the performance of our supplier in this instance, but with our own performance as well. We hold ourselves to a high standard, and in this case, we plainly did not perform to that standard.”

A spokesman for Mercy for Animals said that is a positive step but said the public needs to demand changes in other common veal farming techniques.

It's a real shame that people leave such ignorant comments. As a meat eater, I applaud Costco and other animal rights activists for taking action regarding veal crates and animal abuse. We raise billions of animals every year for our consumption (unfortuantely, much to the detriment of our planet), and is it too much to ask that we treat them as humanely as possible? NO. The bottom line is that people should educate themselves on all issues, especially those that you as a consumer, contribute to. Enough with the sloppy, lazy attitudes and mentality. You can make small changes for the greater good.

I can see why costco jumped on this story. In today's society, we are starting to have a lot more individuals that cry out when they see things like that video. As a company....The bottom line is to turn a profit. Otherwise, whats the point in operating? Now, rather than take a hit from a video that could cause some serious hits to its bottom line, they instead opted to jump on the "ethical" bandwagon and save the CONSUMERS. This never was about the animals, because if it was...they wouldn't be selling meat at all. PERIOD. And finally, for those "vegans" out there...you do realize that the human body is designed as an omnivore right? No, we don't need the copious amounts of meat that we ingest daily, but we do need MEAT protein. Vegetable protein just isn't broken down the same way. Ask any real nutritionist and they will tell you the same....80% fruits and vegetables, 10% grains, and 10% pure, unadulterated, MEAT.

I would to commend King 5 for doing an excellent job covering this story. I very much appreciated the amount of time spent showing the footage of veal calves tethered up in such deplorable conditions. Your news story showed so many people exactly where their veal is coming from. These are not happy calves living in green meadows alongside their mothers! But most of all, I want to thank Costco for acting immediately and stopping the selling of such veal.

NOW if you want to be a veg eater FINE. But DO NOT TRY THE TAKE THE MEAT FROM US MEAT EATERS. After all it has been proven that us meat eaters are smarter then you vegans.

I hope Cosco will be a responsible society seller. I am glad they have taken these actions. To many other corporations are not concerned with what the general public thinks. They are all about the $$$MONEY$$$ Thakfully Cosco seems to have a social consience.

Does it really hurt a baby calf more than a grown cow? Not like we are ruining the chance for the calf to grow up and become the herd president.

Well said david5198. Groups like PETA are sooo mainstream. You know, burning down medical research facilities, suff like that. And all of you Dweebs that claim to support what PETA does had better say goodbye to old Fido because PETA advocates 'equal rights' for all animals and the outlawing of pet ownership. What a bunch of wing-nuts.

My only objection to the treatment of these animals was them being dragged and dropped. Bob Barker and groups like Peta need to shut up. These animals are meant to be eaten. What you eat is a personal choice. Just because you like rabbit food does not mean I like a diet of rabbit food. Stop pushing your idiocy on meat eaters. We do not push our meat eating on you.

Veal is the same as baby cows. Meat eating in modern times is a very cruel industry but we always turn the other way when it is something we like. Just as we look the other way by not wanting to assume responsibility for the killings in Mexico knowing that buying drugs for casual use is part of the reason why drug cartels exist. Every professional, high schooler, university student, Mom and Dad who buys drugs for fun are part of the killing fields in Mexico. The same goes for all of you veal and meat eaters.

I know cows feel fear. We killed a steer and hung him from the bucket of the tractor to bleed out. After that the cows all chased the tractor. Oh, that was because there was a bale in the bucket. Never mind!!!!

rustyrebel, you are such a fine human being for e-mailing Costco to let them know that YOU approve! I bet they will be so impressed with your e-mail that all veal meat will now have a "rustyrebel approved!" sticker attached! Me on the other hand, I'm going to e-mail them to petition them to start carrying California Condor feather pillows. I also commend them for providing so many of those six-pack plastic rings when you buy a double case of pop, they help me choke seaguls when I go to the dump and they help me choke fish when I dump them into the sound.

Gee what will safeco do about battery chickens? chickens and fish are exempt from government inspections (as you have seen lately) for how they are treated because they 'can't feel pain' and were exempt by lobbyists

dierdra, humans have been hunting and eating meat since the dawn of time. I have worked on farms and ranches and seen the inside of slaughterhouses. I have hunted and fished, cleaned and ate deer, fish and ducks. To all of the people that I know, I am still thought of as a friendly, caring person. To you and other vegans and PETA members I would say you can choose what you want to eat, it's fine with me, I don't care, but please quit trying to force your ways on to others, all it does is create animosity toward you.

Compassion-in everything I do-in everything I am. I can't live with myself any other way. For people who cannot understand and absolutely refuse to believe that animals feel pain, terror and yes, even despair upon coming to the gates of a slaughterhouse-I feel sorry for you. We are creatures meant to evolve and we cannot do that if we continue to look at plates of meat, fur coats, etc., and NOT see the pain and death connected to those things. If people were forced to actually spend a day watching the slaughter of animals-seeing their terror-watching the inhumane ways they are killed-smelling the nauseating scent of blood, death and fear all around them- they would feel different. We have no right to contain animals in tiny, filthy, cramped pens and cages. They are not here on this earth to be abused by greedy humans. It was never meant to be this way. You don't get the big picture-you just don't get it. at all...

LOLOL, oh rustyrebel, you about made me spit out my seal nuggets. But don't worry, they weren't cloned, I beat this seal myself in the wild. Anyway, I would thank PETA, but everytime I see a member they just give me a hard time about my fur coat. I mean, come on already. Is it my fault that the fur of the endangered Himalayan Cute and Cuddly Koala Puppy is so warm and toasty. I think not! Anyway..what were we talking about? Oh yeah, how great PETA is and the whole two-headed great grandkid thing. LOL, oh man, I'm laughing again....
