Orcas Island offers fine food, festivals and high flying fun

Orcas Island, Wash -- Kim Holcomb visits Orcas Island, named for a Spanish explorer, not the whale. First stop is Moran State Park, which boasts the highest point in the San Juan Islands, Mount Constitution, with its stone tower and Instagram-worthy views.

Doe Bay Resort may be remote, but many have discovered the cabins, campsites and yurts gracing the 38 acres surrounding a pristine kayaking bay. The Doe Bay Cafe features high quality cuisine in a rustic, low key setting. They specialize in breakfasts, and most of what they cook is grown in their garden. Every August, the resort's music festival sells out: Doe Bay Fest lets fans listen to their favorite local and national bands in meadows, under trees, and always up close and personal.

The Barnacle is a new addition to the Orcas Island community, and is one of Washington's most eclectic bars. Owner Jared Lovejoy came from Seattle, and his family friendly establishment serves craft cocktails blended from eclectic potions, as well as fancy Shirley Temples for the under-21 crowd.

If the view from Moran isn't enough, fly high in a bi-plane with Magic Air Tours. It's just one more way to appreciate Orcas Island.
