A naval ship is en route to rescue a family stranded in their sailboat off the coast of Mexico.

Celebrating the beginning of a lifetime adventure, Eric, Charlotte, 3-year-old Cora and 1-year old Lyra Kaufman launched from San Diego on their sailboat, the Rebel Heart last month.

Nearly two weeks later, the tone changed.

A distress call came into the U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday.

Lyra had fallen seriously ill, and her parents' sailboat was without power and steering in rough waters 900 nautical miles off the coast of Mexico.

Helicopters with the California Air National Guard finally located the 36-foot boat after a challenging journey of their own, refueling in mid-air.

Pararescuers are now with baby Lyra on board the Rebel Heart, and will load the year-old and her family onto a naval ship when it arrives.

The Kaufman's planned a trip across the world, and blogged regularly about their travels. Officials have not released any details about why Lyra is sick.
