ATLANTA (AP) — Health officials say better screening of immigrants may explain the big dip in tuberculosis cases in the U.S. last year.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week that the nation's TB rate dropped more than 11 percent last year.
That's the largest single-year decrease in more than 50 years of record keeping. TB rates have been falling in the U.S. but generally about 4 percent a year.
The drop was so steep that some experts are cautious about celebrating. While better screening overseas may explain the decline, the CDC says it could mean that some cases aren't being diagnosed or treated.
