Union leader says Philly transit strike will go on

Posted on November 7, 2009 at 7:32 PM

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The president of Philadelphia's largest transit union says it will continue to strike and its members will not be back to work Monday morning.

Willie Brown says his union has agreed only on proposed wages in a contract presented by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. He says that the union wants an independent audit to ensure the security of its pension funds.

Brown says the union won't consider reopening negotiations if a national health care overhaul plan were passed. SEPTA has asked for such an agreement.

Gov. Ed Rendell had been negotiating talks until they broke off Saturday evening. He has called on union members to vote on the contract proposal.

The union has been on strike since Tuesday. No new talks are scheduled.
