Mom's touching letter to woman who shamed her for 'spoiling' special-needs baby

A mother's Facebook post is shared by thousands after a woman shames her for 'spoiling' her special-needs child.

Unsolicited advice can be annoying at best. Often it’s just uncomfortable and sometimes these random bits of wisdom can be psychologically draining.

But for a mother shopping with her adopted daughter, unsolicited advice was the inspiration for a poignant letter that’s being shared by thousands of parents on Facebook.

Kelly Dirkes’ adopted daughter, Grace, has special needs, and has suffered numerous medical problems, including sepsis and organ failure.

During a shopping trip to Target, Dirkes was pulled aside by a woman who was critical of her parenting style.

“I’ve heard it before, you know,” wrote Dirkes in a Facebook post. “That I ‘spoil that baby.’ You were convinced that she’d never learn to be ‘independent.’ I smiled at you, kissed her head and continued my shopping.”

Dirkes used the odd encounter to tell the story of her daughter. How Grace spent the first months of her life alone inside a metal crib.

“If you only knew what her face looked like the moment her orphanage caregiver handed her to me to cradle for the very first time -- fleeting moments of serenity commingled with sheer terror. No one had ever held her that way before, and she had no idea what she was supposed to do” wrote the mother.

The post has been shared nearly 25 thousand times on Facebook.
