Tacoma considers regulating massage parlors

Tacoma is considering massage parlor regulation after shutting down seven parlors this month.

The city is considering restricting parlor hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to prevent illicit activity. Tacoma already regulates hours that restaurants, music clubs, and pawn shops, cannot be open, and Tacoma city councilman Marty Campbell said it should be the same for massage parlors.

Police also said women were being trafficked through the parlors.

“This is not someone who's trying to pay their way through college,” Campbell said. “This is someone who is forced into a trade that I'm certain they didn't sign up for.”

Tacoma resident Jackelyn Elivondo lives across the street from one of the parlors that was shut down, and witnessed strange activity while it was open, including people coming at 2 a.m. for a massage.

Elivondo worries regulating hours may not be enough.

“Just because they've been shut down here doesn't mean they're going to stop, and that's the unfortunate part about it,” Elivondo said.
