Hundreds honor fallen Tacoma officer at vigil

TACOMA, Wash. – Hundreds attended a vigil Thursday night for fallen Tacoma officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez.

Gutierrez was shot and killed when responding to a domestic call Wednesday.

People honored and remembered Gutierrez outside the Tacoma Police Substation through music, speeches, and prayer. Local artist Vicci Martinez performed a song that she hoped would “warm up” the crowd.

A number of law enforcement were in attendance to show their solidarity.

“In the coming weeks, we’re going to need your support,” said one Tacoma Police lieutenant.

The vigil ended with a rendition of Amazing Grace.

There is a second vigil planned at Sheridan Elementary, 5317 McKinley Avenue E, at 8 p.m.
