Olympia woman attempts to kayak Puget Sound in three days

KING 5's Ryan Takeo reports.

OLYMPIA, WASH. - One Olympia woman is preparing for a fundraising adventure that’s outside her comfort zone.

“I’m pretty nervous, I’m not a skilled kayaker, but I’m excited,” said Kara Lynn Sampson.

Sampson plans to start a 50-mile, three-day trek through Puget Sound Friday at Golden Gardens Park in Seattle. If the adventure goes according to plan, she’ll end up at Olympia’s Boston Harbor Marina Sunday afternoon.

She’s raising money for her foundation, the Kara Lynn Foundation, which helps kids battling epilepsy gain confidence.

“My entire life, I’ve had epilepsy,” said Sampson. “I had several seizures a week at some points and was in and out of the hospital. Having something like that happen, it’s embarrassing.”

There’s a catch: Sampson’s foundation only gets what she raises if she completes the trek. It’s called “Dare for Dollars.”

Sampson will stay close to shore and will have a safety boat nearby. She will need to complete an average of 15-18 miles a day.

“I did 15 miles one day and that about killed me. The next couple days were rough, but I’m not getting discouraged,” she said.

Sampson sees this as a matter of will.

“It’s a mental thing I think more than anything,” she said.
