Saturday is the day of KING 5's 16th annual Home Team Harvest event, benefiting Northwest Harvest. This year the goal is to raise enough funds and donations to provide five million meals for families in need in Washington state. Right now in Washington, 1 in 5 children struggles with hunger.
Northwest Harvest does tremendous work throughout the state in a variety of areas including helping food banks and meal programs, as well as high-needs schools.
One of the many things that the organization does every single week is their Sandwich Brigade. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning volunteers pack the kitchen at their headquarters in Seattle and make sandwiches for the hungry.
“No questions asked. We just want to make sure we take care of the people who are hungry,” Sandwich Brigade supervisor Terrie Johnson said. “We want to make sure that we give somebody a nice sandwich to eat. They’re a little bit heftier than other sandwiches and they could be the only thing somebody has to eat for the whole day, so we want to make sure they get a good nutritious lunch.”
Bruce Landon is one of the volunteers who helps out. He says it’s the most satisfying volunteer work of his life.
“I just come here in the morning and make sandwiches for a couple hours, and you know within an hour or so that sandwich, all those sandwiches, are going to be eaten by people who would otherwise be hungry,” Landon said. “It’s really not a big sacrifice, and as I say, you see that immediate good that gets done.”
That is just one of the areas where Northwest Harvest helps out.
