How much money can you save going carless in Seattle?

Saving money is one of the perks of ditching your car.

Recent numbers from the American Community Survey show about 1 in 6 Seattle households don’t have a car.

One of the perks is saving money. KING 5's Ryan Takeo looked into this by going through his own budget. Takeo has been without a car six months.

Expenses:

$282 car payment

$167 for car insurance.

$158 to park downtown.

$100 for gas

That equals $707 – and that doesn’t include the cost of repairs and routine maintenance.

Now that he’s carless, he spends:

$50 for two ORCA cars in his household

$150 for carshare and rideshares

So altogether, that’s a savings of $507 a month.

Earlier Tuesday, Ryan broke down one of the biggest hurdles of going carless: the logistics.
