Boy airlifted after being hit in crosswalk in Federal Way

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- A 9-year-old boy was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after being hit by a vehicle while in a crosswalk Thursday morning.

Federal Way Police say the boy, a third grader at Panther Lake Elementary, was hit by a driver who failed to yield. The boy was in the crosswalk at 1st Avenue S. and S. 337th Street and lights were flashing.

The boy has a serious leg injury and some facial lacerations.

Police say the collision happened just outside the 20 mph school zone of the school, so the speed limit was 35 mph. A police spokesperson could not immediately say how fast the vehicle was going when it hit him.

The spokesperson did not say what the driver would be cited with.

The district says a crisis response team will be at the school today to offer support to students and staff.
