THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. – A Yelm man has been arrested for vehicular assault after a motorcyclist was hit and seriously injured.

The State Patrol says 46-year-old James J. Stilton of Yelm was riding a 1997 Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on Vail Road in Thurston County and began to slow in the roadway to make a left turn onto Hannus Rd.

Troopers say the 26-year-old Yelm man was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram pick-up northbound behind Stilton.  He failed to stop and struck Stilton from behind.

Stilton was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The driver of the pick-up was arrested and booked into Thurston County Jail.

The biker always takes the direct hits, were trained in rider saftey to be in 1st gear and looking in mirrors for trouble, but the truck was really hauling along. Just so many clowns out on the road. I don't trust turn signals, I use my motocross experience to worm my way through some things. But, wow! Hope that driver kept his insurance up.

That Vail Road area is dangerous! After you pass thru Roy and go down towards all of the horse, sheep and cow farms, it can get pretty dangerous. No place to be speeding or not paying attention. I've driven through there many times on a Mercedes and it can be pretty scary at night. I wouldn't even think about riding a motorcycle down Vail Road.

The driver of the truck was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the state patrol. This was posted in the Olympian by some friends of his.."he was hit at 50 miles an hour he has 6 broken ribs, pelvis broke in 4 places, both hips broken, both shoulders broken, and 7 broken vertabres." Ive been riding on the road now for 27 years myself and Ive been hit by 3 cars, two minor collisions, one of them by someone trying to pass me on the left while I was turning into a driveway on the left hand side of the road. The second was a car pulled out of a development just as I passed, clipping me which didnt even result in a fall, the 3rd was by a drunk driver who made a left turn into me as I was approaching from the opposite direction. Thats over a span of about 400,000 road miles. I hope this guy makes it out of this without permanent injuries, but thats doubtful. He wont be on the road again for at least a year.

It's the chances we take when we hop on two wheels. I personally think its worth it. Hope he makes a full recovery and is able to ride again soon.

The driver of the pickup was not watching the road. He probably was talking on a cell phone at the time in impact. I have been riding since 1962 and you ALWAYS have to watch out for the other people on the road. In this case he was blind sided and hit from the rear. I hope the rider makes it ok.
