FORT LEWIS, Wash. - Nearly 500 wounded soldiers are spending this Veterans Day in rehab at Fort Lewis.
They make up the Warrior Transition Battalion, a unit created by the U.S. Army last year to take care of soldiers wounded while on duty.
"We owe that to our brothers," said Major Ed Ekstrom, Executive Officer of the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Lewis.
The battalion provides the troops with housing, schooling and vocational training as part of their recovery and transition from soldier to citizen, if they are unable to continue their military careers.
The "WTB" as it is called on post, was created following a series of reports criticizing the Army's care of its wounded soldiers. Major Ekstrom said the battalion proves the military is trying to do a better job.
"It has taken time," said Major Ekstrom, "It would have been nice to have this before, but we have it now."
