SEATTLE - Work is set to resume Monday on a suicide-prevention fence for Seattle's Aurora Bridge.

The 8-foot, 9-inch fence around the rim of the bridge has been designed to discourage people from jumping. More than 230 people have jumped to their deaths since the 167-foot bridge opened in 1932. The group Seattle FRIENDS says more than half of the victims landed on pavement and busy intersections.

For Rachel Izzo, the deadly statistic came all too true. Four years ago, her 15-year-old soccer teammate jumped from the bridge to her death.

"We were all effected by it for a really long time," says Izzo. "It's was like I''d  been like just kind of hit over the head. I was just numb."

Izzo and others felt the state had to do something.

" I felt really strongly that something needed to be done," Izzo said. "Not only does it effect all the family members and friends of the person, but I know people who saw the whole thing and they have to live with seeing them everyday. So I think it (the fence) will make a huge difference."

The state Department of Transportation says the $4.6 million project is expected to continue through the fall. Crews will work on mostly Sunday through Thursday nights, closing lanes at times. The project was first scheduled to begin in April, but the contractor had to resolve some equipment problems.

The DOT says at times, work will be noisy, and when possible, they will shield noise sources to minimize the effects on those near the bridge. People who live or work nearby can call (206.267.6019) or e-mail and DOT will send free earplugs.

Earplugs are also available between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays at the Fremont Neighborhood Service Center located at 908 N. 34th Street.

I think bungee cords are a lot more fun! Who knows? They might decide to live after trying it once. Hooray!

Give the earplugs and maybe some blinders to the people that live and work in the area so they won't see or hear the jumpers. A lot cheaper and probably more effective than a 4.6 mil fence.

If people are going to commit suicide, their going to commit suicide, i really dont think this is about suicide prevention, i think its just preventing the horrible sound and view people see down below when people jump off, if i lived down there i sure as hell wouldnt want to see that

4. We can't or shouldn't protect people from themselves. Unfortunately, the effect of Aurora Bridge suicides extends far beyond the suicidal individual. They significantly affect that person's family and friends, people who live and work below the bridge, Burke Gilman Trail users, and emergency responders.

2) Spend the money on suicide prevention programs or something else instead. This project is funded through the gas tax. The 18th amendment to the Washington State Constitution dedicates gas taxes to highway purposes. Transferring the money to suicide prevention programs would be unconstitutional.

Okay, people, from now on, when you commit suicides, choose guns! That way, there will be some dramatic gun controls! What a f*cking BS!

This is definitely a long-awaited, and much needed fence to keep people from killing themselves. I feel bad Seattle is one of the top-rated suicide cities. This alone is justification to build fences on all the other bridges too. Even if these bridges saves one life, it is worth it.

stupid stupid stupid stupid waste of money. let them kill themselves if that's what they want; why do we waste our time and money like this? for those who watch, get over yourself, get a backbone, people die everyday and we act like it's a tragedy, it is the natural circle of life, you are going to die, I am going to die, we are all going to die and some people like to decide when and how for themselves, so let them and get on with it.

I heard a rumor that the city was considering installing a gate in the fence but had not yet come to a consensus on the fee for the jumping permit. Some officials were said to have suggested just adding a jumping tax to the purchase of candy and bottled water since this was the likely target group that would be using the new service.

I'd go with trampoline option. It's way cheaper. Especially, if they buy them from Walmart.

@ yogibear... THIS WON'T SAVE LIVES! Have you not gotten the point? People with the intent to jump off a bridge to kill themselves just WON'T jump off THIS bridge. They will find another or get a gun, or some pills, or a hose for their car. Get a clue genius.

Are they going to put up a fence on every high level bridge? Putting up a fence on Aurora bridge will just make the jumpers move to the West Seattle bridge. Quit wasting tax payers money!

This outrageous waste of taxpayer money, my taxpayer dollars, makes me want to, well ... it makes me want to... JUMP OFF THE FREAKING AURORA BRIDGE it makes me so angry. And if I can't get over the stupid suicide barrier, I'll just have to make my way down to the West Seattle Bridge, or the I-5 Ship Canal bridge. And If I find I can't jump off those bridges, I guess I'll just have to stand on the tracks of another waste of taxpayer dollars, the Link Light Rail.

@ yogibear -- I too have had friends commit suicide, one in 1996 via gunshot and one last week via pills... and yes I still feel this is a waste of money. If someone is truly intent on doing the deed they are going to do it regardless if we spend over 4 million bucks on one bridge to prevent it. IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY. ESPECIALLY during these times. I can name a dozen ways that money SHOULD be spent to help the truly needy in our community.

Yogi-bear, I have lost a fmaily member to suicide. My father-but yet I don't think guns should be banned. A fence will not prevent or solve a suicdal person's intent. The fence is more for the unfortunate people who witness a body falling then for the actual suicidal community. My opinion anyhow....

How do we get a breakdown of the cost estimate of this project? It's frustrating for our E. Washington highways to need work and Seattle is paying millions for a suicide fence! It shouldn't cost millions first of all, second if it's that important work on prevention. Does government plan on placing fences on every bridge? How about train tracks? This is ridiculous. Post a sign saying "NO JUMPING" and put the money to better use! HA!

Waste of money and time. How stupid. Aside from the points that factoid brings up trying to figure out why it costs so much, it's just a waste of money. As others point out, people will find another way to kill themselves. And, if this really does require that taxpayers throw money at it, then why not hire a guard to stand there. At least that way we would help unemployment by employing someone. And think of the math. Let's assume a guard got $50K, and we needed six to staff the bridge full time, 24x7. That's $300K a year. $4.5 million comes out to about 15 years of full time employment for 6 people.

The city of Seattle seems to be going out of their way to find stupid things to spend tax payers money on. If someone wants to kill themself let them. Why stop there. They should buy up all guns so no one can kill themself. Go down the list of ways to kill yourself and then think of ways the city could keep you from doing it. When is government going to go back to governing and stop interfering in peoples private lives. I am sure glad I dont live in Seattle. I am lucky I live in Tacoma where I just have to worry about being shot. Not robbed by my elected government officials.

Let them jump and save tax payers dollars. Set up a target under the bridge surrounded by dumpsters for them to jump to! If they miss the target and land in the dumpsters then its easier to dispose of the remains then its off to the landfill! The city already has a contract with Waste Management so its a minimal charge! So there, problem solved and no taxes wasted!

Kind of makes you question, why they are always screaming about not having enough money, yet they can spend $ 4.6 million on a fence. I am a small contractor and have an idea what a fence costs. Commercial grade 10' fence should be about $50 to $60 per LF. Now the bridge is ~ 3000 feet. So times 2 equals 6000 feet. So let's say because Government is involved, we will make it an even $100 per LF or $ 600,000.00. Let's double it again, due to difficulty or maybe special design, this would get us to $1.2 million. How do we arrive at $ 4.6 million?

Yep, just like the morons pushing gun control. People will just use other means to finish the task. Kids are learning, so childproofing is needed. Adults don't need adultproofing.

4.6 milliion dollars... so people will overdose on pills or shoot themselves or stick a hose in their idling car window instead of jumping off this particular bridge. What a complete waste of money.
