SHORELINE, Wash. - A split-second accident on Tuesday killed an elderly woman and left her two friends in critical condition.

It happened in front of stunned shoppers in Shoreline along Aurora Avenue. Police on the scene said the women were not able to speak as medics worked on them.

It appears the three elderly friends inside the car had just left a lunch date.

The three were regulars at the Shari’s restaurant just across the parking lot from the crash. They would come in every couple of weeks and eat lunch and catch up on each others’ lives.

It appears that the driver somehow lost control of her car as they pulled away from the restaurant and crashed into a post. Deputies say it appears the driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake.

People inside the craft store said they car had to have been moving pretty fast because the building shook like an earthquake:

The impact didn’t look all that great, but the air bags in the Honda accord deployed, and those alone can do quite a bit of damage, especially to an elderly woman.

The women were all at least 80 years old. The woman who died was in the front passenger seat. Both the driver and a backseat passenger are also in critical condition.

"We just heard a loud bang. You could see the lights shaking. Sounded like something hit the building....It really breaks my heart I was at the store with my gramma and seeing it is just really sad,” said witness Alison Grabick.

No one else was hurt.

The lady hit the gas instead of the brake and panicked, pressing even harder. I've seen this before. Age may be a factor but anyone can be incompetent. Lucky she didn't run anyone over.

Gariba1di - I am sorry for your loss. This reminds me to reach out to my loved ones to let them know how much I care about them. Also, don't bother trying to talk any sense into the commenters here, with the advent of the internet, facebook, cell phones, DVR's etc. people have totally removed the human element from their lives. Everything becomes about policy and procedure; It's more important to them to decide what the rules should and should not be to protect our best interests, but what they don't realize is that what is in their best interest is to learn how to care for one another, especially someone for whom they don't know. Compassion and empathy; two words that seems to not have a meaning anymore.

Sad sad sad story, poor driver has a lot of guilt she will no doubt live with. I hope this opens her eyes that its time to hand over the keys. And maybe open the eyes of some other elderly drivers that your freedom is not worth other people's lives or your own. My condolenses to all involved, such a loss.

flyinggaff - let's not confuse issues. As I said, driver safety and competence is important, but let's have that discussion in a different context. You all don't know anything about the driver or passengers and are making assumptions based on age alone. What makes these poor individuals guilty before proven innocent. The driver could have had a heart attack or stroke, which can happen at any age. Or the car may have malfunctioned. What makes it so easy to place blame on strangers instead of displaying compassion?

They make young kids take safety courses and pass tests. People after a certain age should also be scrutinized to assure they are capable drivers. The only difference between the two categories is old people have lobbies protecting them. A senile, age compromised driver is no safer behind the wheel than a drunk. If that is insensitive, tough.

I think the commenters here have missed the point... the crash did not injure or kill them.. it was the air bags. They can ALSO kill children if they are in the front seat or the car has back seat side bags. Only the young and middle aged benefit from air bags, but then since they are the ones who invented the things, that is really all they care about. As far as the jokers who think this is funny.. efu.

Instead of focusing on driving laws and car safety, wouldn't it be better to consider how we would want our grandmother to be discussed in a public forum if it had been her in the accident today? The deceased was a friend of ours and will be deeply missed by family, friends, and acquaintances. Hopefully, the other two women will be fine.

Maybe we need to apply the same standard of one "your fault" accident and "you're" done to those who are 16-21....I've been hit 3 times by young people, the last of which changed my life forever......I think there are more accidents caused by inexperienced drivers than those who are older. I am sorry for the family of the woman who died and for the driver and passenger...I wish them a full recovery.

We really need to start testing the elderly at age 65 yearly. At age 80, every 6 months. One at fault accident after 65, you're done. Don't like it?You do not have a RIGHT to drive. Period.

@fostergrant- how does a car hit the gas?

This definitely calls for more mandatory safety features in compact cars... perhaps these people would be less hurt if we did so.

Airbags are life-savers but much less effective if seat belts aren't used. The article did not indicate whether the seat belt/upper torso restraints were in use or not, so this is not intended as "blame game" but just as a reminder to use them and check that your inertial reel/tensioner is doing its job. Best wishes for the recovery of the two surviving friends.

That's the second major car accident at that JoAnn's. The first was a year or two ago. A car hit the gas instead of the brake and ran clear through the store almost to the back and it's a BIG store.

How many people died this last week because of an 80 year old in a P-41 Mustang??? Driving, flying, riding your Harley..........it can't go on forever---at least not without jeopardizing you or your fellow citizens at some point.

If the state banned elderly drivers they would lose revenue from their emission tests. So that aint happening.

The state needs to look into an age when the elderly should stop driving, I know my 93 year grandfather only just stopped driving because my aunt convinced him to sell her his car. My heart goes out to the family and the survivors.

That is a Honda Civic, not an Accord. I hope that the survivors are ok.

RIP.. What has the state done recently about old people and their ability to retain a driver's license on Washington roadways?
