DES MOINES, Wash. - A diver is in critical condition after running into trouble while diving at Redondo Beach.

Police say at about 8:30 a.m. a 50-year-old Spokane woman was taking a dive with her instructor and her boyfriend, who is a certified diver.

When she was about 50 feet down, her mask starting filling with water and she couldn't get the air regulator in her mouth.

"The instructor felt the student tug on her arm and that's when she noticed the student was in distress with water in the mask and having trouble with the regulator," said Sgt. Bob Collins, Des Moines Police Dept.

Collins said the woman had to make a quick ascent and her instructor ascended with her.

When she was taken out of the water she was breathing but not conscious. An aid crew could not detect a pulse and began CPR.

The woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in critical condition.

I would be willing to bet the air tank and mask are the same ones the other 50 year old died wearing..... What are the odds???

What is sad is this is the second accident involving this shop. The last student died in a training dive, similar to this one. As far as I know the shop is still in litigation regarding that incident. Everyone from that shop is giving SCUBA a bad reputation and SSI should pull all of their instructor ratings until they can follow the rules. Plus what kinda of person certifies an instructor who can't keep their students safe, act appropiately around them and also follow simple rules for teaching? With that said, I pray for the student and her family. Hopefully they clean this shop out and keep this from ever happening again.

The scariest thing about this whole article is that people like riverman are out walking freely in our society. Unbelievable!

Riverman--Take a look! This happened in WASHINGTON! FYI might want to check facts first. Yes there is a Redondo Beach Ca, however, I don't believe that King County rescue personal will travel there. LOL! Plus the location header states: "DES MOINES, Wash." As for it being to chilly to dive, it's possible if not wearing the correct wetsuit. If wearing the wrong thickness wetsuit, one could get could get cold quickly if proper retention of the water in the suit isn't kept. However in this case, it sounds like something else went wrong and the cold didn't play a factor, but since we weren't there, we can only speculate.

This Redondo Beach is just southwest of Sea-Tac. At slack tide Puget Sound is a great place to dive in early Spring. With proper gear the water temperature isn't a factor. Without a regulator clearing the mask is a problem, and with a mask full of water seeing is a problem. A single hair in the mask seal may not cause a leak at 20 feet but can at 50. Just one of those things. Nobody's fault at all. I pray she'll be okay and return to the sport.

daverino- first of all, this took place in southern california, so i doubt it was all that chilly. second, the water temp in the ocean maybe changes 3-4 degrees, regardless of the seasons. so to say its too chilly to go diving makes no sense, on any level.

My thoughts are with her. I'd say with her b/f and instructor too, but one or the other should've confirmed the trainee's mask and regulator were properly fitted to avoid this. I truly hope she recovers without ill effect.

A little chilly for scuba diving! What kinda boyfriend takes a fifty year old woman scuba diving in March? Hope she will be okay... after she dumps him.
