KIRKLAND, Wash. – A car struck a teenage girl and her young sister as they were crossing the street in Kirkland today.

The sisters were using a crosswalk in the 12600 block of 100th Avenue NE and traffic in the first lane stopped to let them pass. The sisters continued to cross "when a vehicle in the second southbound lane failed to stop and struck both the 16-year-old and her toddler sister," according to a statement from the Kirkland Police Department.

Both girls were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle by ambulance for treatment of possible fractures and a head injury. The woman driving the car remained at the accident scene, police said.

Police are investigating.

I did acknowledge them the best I could considering the circumstances we were in. And I said WAS not IS. I choose not to be rude and insert myself when I'm not sure how someone else feels especially because I knew exactly why they were there and what was going on. I was being respectful. Wow, what a backwards way for you to look at it. I actually came back to the site to see if I could delete the updates out of respect for what was asked of me earlier today but then you posted and I chose instead to respond. It's really to bad for her to burn these bridges. I had no intention of updating anymore as I think most heard what they needed. As I said. I could have just been called.

Cats, I am only writing for the mom. Thoughts & prayers are of course great. It is a few comments that upset her and that's enough. Also if you are so involved why did you not acknowledge them a couple of weeks ago? That's it. I have done what I've been asked to do and that is to request that you stop putting updates on here, and for the reasons that I've been told. Obviously you can take it or leave it.

Adding more....I WAS involved with these children EVERYDAY for almost a year. Did nothing but try to help the mother and offer support. They are always in my heart and I only mean the best and mean well. After seeing them just 2 weeks ago, which hurt my heart more than words can say, then the accident happened, it was devastating to not be able to help. My husband even went to the scene to make sure they were even alive. Do not make me out to be just a "someone". If this is who I think it is, then you should know that. If not, then you don't know me and have no right speaking of me at all.

I did not once say I was in direct contact with the mother. I have said that I was in contact with my friend who was sitting right here next to me when the mother called and when the nurse called. I have said "I heard". And would I say everything I've said to their faces? Absolutely. I've done nothing but have her back and stand up for her. Maybe I'll shut up and let people bash her. As for legal ramifications...and those would be what? Worried these could be used? As you pointed out and as I have said these are obviously 3rd party updates which are technically called hearsay...right? And I am a part of this community and have been for years, they are not the first to be hit...the community has a right to be concerned and I feel know the girls are okay. I have a sneaking suspicion about who this is...I'm really not that naive. You could have just called me. Everyone else. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, the girls deserve them.

itshotinphx- Not sure I've ever seen a post like yours before. I fail to see where showing concern for others has legal ramifications. But since I only went to medical school and not law school I'm probably wrong. Should we stop our prayers as well? Sheesh.

Folks, The mother and the teenage daughter are reading these posts as some of the so-called updates can have legal ramifications. Think about what you are writing and whether you would say this to their faces. BTW most high schools release students earlier. It is hardly unusual for a 16-yo to be out of school in the afternoon. I do know that the poster who is providing "updates" is not in direct contact with the mother. I am. She has asked that you stop doing this.

Update: There hasn't been much going on with the little one but observation today. They had hoped to release her but last I heard they were thinking of keeping her one more night. Big sister on the other hand had a rough go of it over the night and needed surgery on her leg again this morning. She was still in quite a bit of pain and there was more swelling than they'd like. After this mornings surgery she was more comfortable.

A crosswalk vehicles stopped = People crossing so you should stop. There is a Cross Walk in Auburn on 37th that is part of the Interurban trail and I see people fly by that all the time. I haven't seen anyone hurt yet but I have seen numerous rear enders because people aren't prepared to stop. As for the 2 girls I hope they recover and everything goes well.

I live in Renton/Skyway. Going up towards the Bowling alley, always I am hearing about somone getting hit and pedestrians be at marked crosswalks. I think drivers need to slow down and watch where they are going. You are not in that much of a hurry. Don't won't take away someone's life, more importantly, your own. I pray that they will recover smoothly. :)

i would agree with those witnesses just based on what i heard from my backyard--no screeching of tires, only a crash that i knew had to be a car accident, and then screaming. A traffic light would be a great solution, as would more police patrol on the hill coming down from 132nd as that is where i see the most people at speeds above 40mph.

This is a common problem with four lane cross walks, they are very dangerous. At some point you have to ask is it really safe to have a crosswalk without a light at this location or is it like playing roulette with human error? I say put in a user controlled traffic light, crosswalks on four lane roadways with speeds over 25 mph are irresponsible.

I will update on the girls again tomorrow. Not much else is going on since big sis went into surgery. I worry about the wrong information getting out and their mom has enough on her plate! I do want to add that from what the police have said to the mom that they have found no evidence of her on the phone nor did they find one in the vehicle. Witnesses said they saw the crossing lights and knew someone was crossing, even witnesses driving behind this woman saw the lights. It does not look like she was even paying attention as witnesses say that they did not see her even try to stop :( She has tried getting information about the girls today from the hospital so she is concerned. I am sad for her but very angry and trying to think positive. I'm sure she is hurting and scared as well. I hope. The ironic thing about that crosswalk is that it is the first crosswalk in the nation that had the lights lighting up the street as pedestrians cross!

This happened almost right in front of my house. I came running when i heard the crash and screaming. I have used that crosswalk with my children but i always feel safer avoiding it and walking all the way to the intersection of 124th to cross because i don't trust people. I see all day long how fast people drive, especially heading down from 132nd, and especially at rush hour--this street SHOULD be monitored because of how many children walk to and from school. I don't know if the girl was using one of the orange flags but according to statistics posted by the city, they do help. They are useful in cases like this when one lane of traffic stops and the other lane can not see people as they begin to cross the street--i always instruct my children to wave the flag ahead of them before walking the rest of the way. I have prayed for these children all day and i feel so much better reading that they seem to be doing well--thank you and please keep us posted.

When are people going to start obeying the rules of the road? There there for your safety and the safety of others. I hope she get's a big fat fine

I'm happy to update. The thoughts and prayers are helping! The little one after ct scans and other tests is asleep..although still with the neckbrace on...but there are NO internal or head injuries other than her forehead! Sister is about to go into surgery as her leg is broken in 3 places it is swelling and they are concerned, so she will have pins put in. As for why she was out walking her sister. She is homeschooled. I believe she may take a couple classes at Juanita High some of the time. She is very involved in her little sisters lives and was walking with the little one to get the other from the elementary. They live right down the road as it is mostly residential in that area. Mom showed up immediately and rode in the ambulance with the little one. I see nothing wrong with a 16 year old walking with a child...some 16 year olds have their own. Just sayin' :)

I live in the area this accident happened. One problem with these crosswalks (there are two on this stretch of the road) is that this is a 4 lane road with a center turn lane. Where the crosswalk crosses the center lane there is a curbed divider with landscaping. This makes it difficult to see people who are crossing towards you. Also, I feel awful for the 2 girls and their family, but this goes to show that even though pedestrians have the right of way, they need to cross defensively. Many times I have seen people (especially teens) cross without even looking either direction to see if cars are coming. A pedestrian cannot assume cars will see them and stop anymore - drivers are too many times on the phone or texting.

I have a 16 y.o. daughter that goes to Juanita High School...I live on 128th just a couple of blocks from this accident...This is Wed. and all the kids in the Lake Washington School District, get out early on Wed. As drivers we must take responsibility for crosswalks, stop signs and all other traffic control situations. We teach out kids to use these crosswwalks, these girls were doing as they have been taught. Its quite possible the 16y.o. girl is a classmate of my daughters, we just dont have a name yet...prayers go out to them!

Catsintrbleagn...thank you SO much for the update. I was shocked when I drove past and saw those two lying in the street and realized what had happened. I was very worried and I ended up leaving work early because of it. As for the crosswalks, if the lights embedded in the street and the lights above the crosswalk were flashing, the woman driving the SUV should have STOPPED. It boils down to pure inattention to what she was doing and what was going on in front of her. I feel awful for her, yes, but I feel worse for the two who were lying hurt in the road and I hope they make it through with nothing worse than broken bones and bruises.

This is a large crosswalf with flashing lights and overhead signs. This is such a busy road. It would be nice if the police increased ticketing for running crosswalks on occasion to remind people to respect pedestrians.

There are a dozen different ways to cross the street in Kirkland with the orange flags and all. The city has done all it can to keep peds safe. There are just too many cars. For some reason, it seems more dangerous to cross the street in Kirkland. My son suffered a broken leg a few years back while crossing in the Houghton area.

I think what screwdriver is trying to say is that when it comes right down to it, it doesn't matter what the law says regarding who is reposnsible for what. If you're walking anywhere near traffic, you better make sure nobody is coming when you step out to cross the street. Yes, the cars may have the duty to stop for you, but you're still going to lose if you get hit. I'm not blaming the pedestrian here, it was probably the driver's "fault", but it's crazy to assume it's safe to cross even in a crosswalk without actually looking to make sure all lanes of traffic are stopped. I hope and pray for a speedy and full recovery of both the victims here.

screwdriver: Pedestrians have the right of way in the crosswalk, when they have a green/walk light (do not know if there is a light where this happened or just a marked crosswalk). it is the drivers responsiblity to watch for pedestrians int he crosswalk, not to just go racing through the area.

Kirkland7 - That is true for every arterial. People drive too fast many times, not everyone, and people also don't look well enough when crossing. Cars don't get hurt so people are the ones that need to watch because cars making a mistake get a ticket usually, but the people can get killed. So no matter what the conditions, the laws, the rules it is fully on the people crossing to watch for themselves. In this situation, just by speculation, when one lane is stopped and you have a green it's very hard for someone to know exactly what is going on until it is too late, no matter their speed. Complaining about the city post accident is very easy to do.

I know them and all we know so far is that the older sister has a broken leg and the baby has head injuries. However both were awake in the ambulances. A friend who is here right now with the other sister of the two who were hit will be going to the hospital in the next hour. A nurse from the hospital did call but did not sound alarmed. However I know that doesn't mean much. We are hopeful. Please send your thoughts and prayers to the girls and their mother.

Like in Renton on South Renton Village Place in front of Triton Towers One, the city refused to put in a crosswalk, say there isn't enought traffic. But people are crossing there to go to the stores in the Renton Village all day long. There is a sign on the side of the road about people crossing, but hardly anyone pays attention to that, and most do not slow down even slightly. Something bad is going to happen one of these days.

I live on 100th ave NE and have called 911 many times about people speeding and not stopping for people in the crosswalks on 100th ave ne. The Kirkland Police claim that its an arterial that it is not patrolled.Yet 100th avenue has two schools which include Juanita Elementary and Juanita High School and two local parks. My wife asked the City of Kirkland to put up an electronic sign that displays peoples speed but the city stated that it wasn't in their budget. On numerous 911 calls we warned the Kirkland Police that someone was going to be killed or severely injured and still nothing changed. After arguing with the Kirkland Police they only patrolled 100th ave ne a few times then it stopped again.
