COUPEVILLE, Wash. – The Island County Prosecutor has charged 18-year-old Kaylea Souza with vehicular homicide in the deaths of three young men in a crash on Nov. 12.

Souza was driving a 2003 four-door Chevrolet southbound on Wilkinson Road near Meandor Lane just after 12 a.m. Saturday when she passed another vehicle, lost control and ran off the road, striking a tree. The car burst into flames.

Marcel “Mick” Porter, Robert Knight and Charles “Mack” Porter were killed.

Prosecutors say Souza was drunk and drove “recklessly, and with disregard for the safety of others, which led to the deaths of her friends.”

Prosecutors are awaiting toxicology reports but preliminary information from investigating officers shows that Souza showed signs of intoxication and smelled of alcohol.

According to probable cause documents, Souza told Langley Police that she had consumed a 40-ounce "Micky's" and some "Olde English.”

Souza also said, "I wasn't that drunk,” and later yelled out, "I can't believe they let me drive," documents say.

Souza is being held in the Island County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.  If convicted, she faces between four and six years in prison.

Murder is murder people! And this IS murder. Whether you kill someone with a gun, knife, fist or car because of senseless irresponsibility and stupid decisions -- it's MURDER. It's too late to say she didn't mean to do it - SHE DID IT. Those three lives and three families have been destroyed because SHE made the CHOICE to drink and drive - period. And slap-on-the-wrist is right! 4-6 years for murdering three people??? Would you feel that your child's life was worth 4 years? Don't forget -- she automatically gets 1/3 off for good behavior - Washington State's secret law to help keep our prisons from overflowing. So, she'll end up spending about 1 year per life she took away. Disgusting. Contact your law makers to demand tougher laws to keep our roads safe so our children don't become the next victims of some selfish drunk. Washington State has the higest DUI rate in the country -- maybe not if vehicular homicide here would be treated a little harsher than shop lifting. Tragic choices.

As a person who is closer to the situation than most out here who are only commenting without knowing the full story I would like to shed a little light on this. First , all three of these guys were known to party a lot and it is well known amongst many of their peers that they too drank and drove all the time. Kaylea was more than likely pressured into driving so the other guys could go the the store to buy more beer. Second of all 'kill' is a pretty strong word. This was an accident, not something that she intentionally went out to do. These were her friends that died and she is hurting just as much as the victim's families. While she had no business driving, she also did not deserve to be pressured into driving those young men to the store so they could have more to drink. There are no innocent victims here, they all lived dangerously and this time it unfortunately caught up with them.

Wow, what a way to learn a lesson!!! This is something this young girl is going to have to live with for the rest of her life. She will always be aware that her irresponsible actions caused the death of Three of her best freinds. I know that isn't enough for most people, but this girl is only 18 years old! She will have to face the law and the punishment that they give her, but she will always punish herself for the rest of her life! How about if everyone decides to let the LE handle it! I really don't think this girl decided to get in the car and kill her 3 friends, it was an accident that could have been prevented, and she will face charges due to it, but its not up to us ( the public) to condemn her. I pray all families involved can find eventually peace. In the meantime, know that ALL things happen for a purpose.

If only she was smoking marijuana and not drinking everyone would be alive and happy.

The other teens who died were probably just as wasted to get into a car behind a drunk driver. Reality could be a harsh lesson. Unfortunately no amount of jail time, death penalty, or torture would deter other teens from doing the same. Teenagers are afraid to say "I'm too drunk to drive", or "you're too drunk to drive" lest they get laughed at, and they think they are invincible. It seems they only learn the hard way. Could nobody come up with an effective way to teach people not to drink and drive? Obviously just telling people not to do it, does not work.

She should get the death penalty before she kills someone else.

Don't you think the fact that she has no criminal record, not even a speeding ticket should weigh into her sentencing? And yes, she did contradict herself. Maybe she was a little shook up after watching three people she cared about burn up in a car crash. Of course it was a mistake, no one would wish this upon anyone, especially kaylea. She is a gentle, caring, kind, and loving girl and would have done anything for Mick, Mack, and Rob. You say Burn in hell, i say don't throw a girls hopes, dreams and life away to make an example. She lived for a reason only God knows.

Boy I bet she sure learned a lesson. If you are going to kill multiple people drink and drive. Even when you are not even old enough to be drinking the penalty is far less than a slap on the wrist. And if any of those three in the car with her had less to drink than she did they sure learned a fatal lesson.

I feel sorry for her family and all the people and families impacted by her stupid mistake. But Souza is not a victim. And I agree with the rest of the folks on here that 6 years is not enough time in jail. I think at least 12 to 14 years would be reasonable, with no early out. And no more driving for Souza the rest of her life, however long that is. They need to crack down on this stupidity. Then maybe they would get smart and not drive drunk.

Three adults chose to get in the car with a drunk driver. How is it not their fault? If she ran someone over, she is totally at fault. If you get in the car with a drunk, Darwin is watching you.

Four to six years is a slap on the wrist. At least the girl who killed Brian Wood and 2 other guys on Whidbey a year ago Sept. got 8 years...and should have gotten a whole lot more. When anyone is driving DUI they should get much stiffer sentences than 6 - 8 years. They do such stupid stuff when they are under the influence. And killing 3 people or even one should be grounds for longer sentences. Just makes me furious.

4-6 years is an injustice. 4-6 years is a slap on the wrist...although her life will now be screwed as there will be 3 unlawful death suits against her probably for $1 million a piece at least.

If she was drunk and drove a car, she should go to prison for the rest of her life. REMEMBER people, It may seem ok to drive when you are a little buzzed, but a little buzzed is DRUNK. . ASK yourself a question. If I drive home will I accidentally kill someone?

"Souza also said, "I wasn't that drunk,” and later yelled out, "I can't believe they let me drive," documents say..... Kind of contradictory there, ain't it, Kaylea? And thank you, Washington lawmakers, for making FOUR to SIX YEARS the MAXIMUM penalty for this KILLING OF THREE PEOPLE. You should be ashamed of yourselves. As should we for continuing to elect them and tolerate ridiculously light penalties like this.... I have no sympathy for her or anyone else that makes this decision that they later call a "mistake." She should be in prison for at least ten years per person she killed. DISGUSTING.

This story is so sad. I hope Souza gets help and makes amends to the families of the three young men. I hope that others get the message not to drink and drive. I hate to say that I did when I was young and thank God I didn't hurt myself or anyone else. I did get help and I've been clean and sober since 1976.

She's underage. I sure hope the law finds out who served the alcohol and goes after THAT person just as hard. Gotta fight it from both ends, both underage serving and underage consuming are illegal.

So she killed three people, and she faces ONLY four to six years in prison? Such an injustice. Yes, those three boys got in the car voluntarily. But stupidity is not unfortunately against the law. RIP boys. Thoughts and prayers to all the family and friends involved.
