EVERETT, Wash. - A group gathering money to preserve a piece of land on Whidbey Island have until Friday to raise the last $525,000. The deadline is one established by the banks that own the property. The Herald newspaper reports more than 1,000 groups and individuals have donated to save the last large contiguous woods on Whidbey Island. Donations are coming from around the world. If the land trust does not meet its fundraising goal by Friday, the nonprofit's board is considering a few options, such as buying fewer acres or getting a loan to give them more time. They hope the land will be protected from development and used for hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, horseback riding and hunting.
