WEST SEATTLE -- After vandals smashed glass and slashed tires outside the home of Lyle Evans and Chris Ilovar, it's no surprise they immediately made plans to install new padlocks and motion-sensing lights.

But before all that they installed something else - a flagpole, with the intent to hang two banners -- a rainbow flag and an American flag.

"Awesome," said Evans. "Take that, haters."

It's a message from the couple to the people who vandalized their cars and left a letter laced with profanity and statements like "Get the f-- out of our neighborhood. The Bible says God forbids men committing indecent act [sic] with other men."

"It feels like a violation," said Evans, "feels really shocking because you don't think things like this happen anymore, especially in Seattle, Washington."

A Seattle Police report said it all happened just after midnight Saturday morning on the 4400 block of 50th Ave SW, in the Genessee Hill neighborhood.

West Seattle Blog first reported on the vandalism Saturday night.

Ilovar said they woke up after hearing a loud noise outside the home.

"We thought it was the cat. We thought it was sprinklers going off," he said.

Ten minutes later, they heard the same sound again.

"I flew open the blinds in our bedroom and that's when I saw shadows running down the street," Ilovar said, "And I went, 'Okay, something's up.'"

While police reports officially call this an act of property damage and malicious harassment, Evans and Ilovar said it's pretty clear from the message left behind that this was a hate crime.

The suspect or suspects slashed all the tires on both men's cars, as well as throwing two baseball-sized rocks -- one through Ilovar's passenger-side window, one through Evans' rear windshield.

The note, signed "KKK," was wrapped around the latter, they said.

The couple doubts the Klan is actually involved, and said neighbors have approached them about seeing two suspicious men walking down their alley just before the incident.

Given that several gay couples live on their street, the two men said they don't know why the vandals targeted them specifically.  But they said the incident has actually brought all their neighbors closer in support.

"It's just kind of disturbing that people put so much effort to hate people," said Ilovar.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Seattle Police Department.

After reading through all the comments over the past few hours, I am again saddened that it always gets turned around when talking about the Bible. Funny, if I believe in a Creator God, I'm a "Bible Thumper." What on earth does that mean, anyway? Yes, the Bible has a lot of things in it; it's also called perspective and taking things in context, not just a verse here and there. Yes, I understand that Romans 1 talks about homosexuality. It also talks about liars, murderers, etc. Romans also tells us that ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. I am thankful that I read the Bible in context, in it's entirety. As far as I can tell, all of us, including myself need the grace of God. Yes, we are all whiners, complainers and I guess some of us "Bible Thumpers." Yet, like I said before in my post, NO person(s) should be treated that way. The problem is sin, and I am sad for it. I don't like the term "hate crime." All crimes are fueled by hate and disrespect for another.

As a born again Christ follower, I would NEVER CONDONE THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR! It angers me that people are so hateful and hurtful to destroy someone's personal property. I will be praying for the justice of the people who were victimized. Please remember also CHRIST FOLLOWERS would NEVER treat anyone like that. We are called to "Love the Lord your God with all your strength, mind, and might." Jesus then says "Love you neighbor as yourself." Of course Jesus Christ would want us to do just that. True believers will always love the person, NO MATTER WHAT! Thanks, I feel better now.

Personally, if they were cool upsatnding folk, it would not make a diff to me WTF they do in their free time. Just tired of the special rights whining that comes from this overly vocal group. Go do it, we dont care, just keep it to your self, like the hetro's do.

I’m shocked, as part of a same-sex couple living north of that site on 53rd. Our neighbors are very supportive and we had another enjoyable “Night Out” street party the first Tuesday of August this year. Sadly legislation like the “Defence of Marriage Act” at the Federal and State levels encourage the people who did this to think that the law is on their side. That is what prevents my American partner from sponsoring me for a Green Card and perpetrates second-class status for all Gay and Lesbian Americans.

Why do I have the feeling that the morons that are saying considering this a hate crime are white, straight males who have never experienced any kind of discrimination or persecution?

Why is everyone confused about what a hate crime is? When a crime is committed with demonstrable animus directed toward an individual because they are a member of a specific class of people who are historically discriminated against, that is a hate crime. What makes this different from other crimes? The repercussions of the crime extend further than simply the victim. When a bias crime happens, it creates a heightened level of fear among the other members of that class of people. It's not as simple as, "Now all of the people in that neighborhood are more concerned about their cars." Just look at this couple's reaction--in the range of fight-or-flight responses, they picked fight. If your car window were broken and tires slashed for no apparent reason, you wouldn't erect a flagpole in your yard. The note adds the hate dimension. When I read about this, I'm reminded that I'm not safe in a way that's very different from being concerned for myself just because crime happens.

@wseaguy: You asked, "why would anyone do this to themselves?" Remember the girl who threw acid in her own face and claimed it was a hate crime committed by a black woman? It happens. I'm not agreeing with stryker that it's self-inflicted this time, but you asked, so I showed you an even more extreme example of something that actually happened.

If we as a society are going to differentiate crimes by calling them Hate Crimes (and we are, whether we like it or not), then this particular crime fits the definition of a Hate Crime. Period. Personally, I think we should be harder on ALL crimes, not just Hate Crimes, but that ship has sailed already, and this is what we have. Since we DO have Hate Crime legislation, this needs to be treated as one.

I look at it this way -- when thugs make their way to a neighborhood and randomly spray paint, smash windows, etc...it's vandalism. When thugs SELECT a specific home/car and take the time to write a very specific message referring to a person's sexuality/race/religion? I think that qualifies as a hate crime -- a lot more in the way of planning goes into it versus it being a random act where the perpetrator really has no clue who their victim is. I would personally be a lot more scared if I were the victim of a hate crime than being the victim of random vandalization - which could happen to anyone.

I just have to throw this out there.... if a crime is committed against you...whats to determine if its HATE or not? I'm pretty sure no crime is committed out if love. I have to say it bothers me when people say "its cause I'm ______" . How do we know these guys aren't complete a-holes and pushed someone over the edge? Property damage should never happen...BUT even they said there were other couples who are gay on their street right? Why them? I only say this cause a remember a gentleman saying this to my mom when I was younger and she said "I dont hate you cause your gay, I hate you cause your a pr*ck".

wseaguy2011, apparently the national consensus is that there are no more racial issues. Blacks are big baby whiners, that cry when they don't get their way. It is now a level playing field!! (sarcasm). So yes, if this happened to a black family, this would also be considered "just vandalism".

@Javajoe, Yeah, not a hate crime... hmmm... not sure how you can't call this a hate crime. Anytime that you write a profanity laced letter and put KKK on it, its a hate crime. Go back and read the article again. It is clear by that letter that this was the intent. @c8lsonics, yeah, motive is EVERYTHING behind why people do garbage like this. Don't play the ignorant fool and think that all crimes are equal, it is not. If this was just kids smaching something for fun, it is FAR different than some jerks who are out to scare and intimidate people they do not like and deserve a larger punishment for it. Your post was pretty ignorant of that fact.

Why should these criminals be punished for anything more than vandalism? A crime is a crime, doesn't matter who is is against, or the motive for it! Hate crimes are a joke.

The Bible has nothing to do with this hate crime. But since you brought it up, the Bible said not to eat shell fish, do you do that> It tells us not to wear cloths that are anything but pure products like cotton. It also tells us to beat our wife if she does not obey her husband. It tells us to enslave others. Oh yes it does. This story is not about who is gay and why.. as if that matters. It is about a hate crime. Those who did this= shame on you. You should know better than that. Not sure why you did it, but trust me this crime will not go un punnished or un noticed. I hope SPD finds you cowards

Allow me to submit something a little out of the ordinary. At least it may sound that to these people in West Seatte. They mentioned that other Gay Couples live in their neighborhood and they don't believe the KKK is involved so...what if it were 'another' Gay Couple that is jealous or just mad at them? What, gay couples don't get mad or jealous? And while we are at it KING 5, what about that Gay Guy who has allegedly murdered not only his spouse but their small adopted son?

We fight against terrorists for a reason. There is no excuse for this behavior. Even when individuals disagree with lifestyle choices and many do, the worse sin is on the head of those who employ violence or terrorism or threats.
