Wash. Ferries proposes reservation system

SEATTLE - A new draft study from Washington State Ferries suggests vehicle reservations could be offered on some ferry routes.

The proposal released this week envisions a reservation system on three central Puget Sound routes in 2015. Those are Seattle-Bainbridge, Seattle-Bremerton and Edmonds-Kingston.

Reservations on the Anacortes-San Juan routes could begin as early as 2011.

The study says terminals on the Southworth-Fauntleroy, Tahlequah-Vashon and Mukilteo-Clinton routes don't have adequate vehicle holding areas and they would be excluded.

The report says a reservation system would reduce wait times, reduce traffic congestion near terminals and cut air pollution from idling vehicles.

It would cost about $26 million but the ferry system says it would eliminate the need to expand terminals and holding areas, an expense estimated at $290 million.

A final report on the proposal will be sent to the Legislature next month.

On the Bainbridge run at least, I think this could actually be a really good idea, specifically on the commuter runs. The idea of having a weekly or monthly pass for a certain run every morning sounds rather appealing to me. By the way Emily, I'm not sure you're clear on what kind of ferries we're talking about here...

I think they should build a Puget Sound tunnel from Seattle to Bremerton with exits to Bainbridge Island.

Editorial by Emily Latella. What is all this fuss I hear about fairies having to make reservations in Washington. Why I thought Washington was one of those progressive states What's that? Oh, never mind.

Requiring a reservation on the Edmonds-Kingston run will make it especially difficult for users of the Port Townsend-Keystone run. The Port Townsend ferry is cancelled so often that we rely on the Edmonds boat as a back up, not we could be left with NO options - every time the wind blows!
