SEATTLE -  Gov. Chris Gregoire says if $480 million in Medicaid matching money doesn't come from the federal government by Aug. 9 she'll have to consider a special session of the Legislature to deal with the budget.

She said Thursday she'll consult with legislative leaders to limit a session to a day or two.

"I don't want to waste money by having legislators around here, that's not going to help us," Gregoire told KING 5 News.

Gregoire said if the session were to last longer than a couple of days, she would be forced to make across-the-board budget cuts.

“If they are honest with me and tell me they can’t get it done,” said Gregoire, “then I’ve got to move forward.”

Gregoire said the last time a Governor called for immediate cuts was in 1991.

Gregoire says the state is facing a projected $3 billion shortfall in the next budget and the slow economic recovery is forcing fundamental changes in state operations.

To give the public a say in expected cuts, Gregoire is asking for ideas on a website and holding a series of forums. Meetings were held Monday in Tacoma and Wednesday in Everett. Others are planned Tuesday in Vancouver and next Thursday Spokane.

jackwong said on July 23, 2010 at 6:18 AM We as citizens definitely need to stand behind Gov. Gregoire to support her in all she does to balance the budget. Even if we have to sacrifice a few pennies a day, I don't see what is the big deal. Just a few pennies mean all the kids and elderly can keep their healthcare, and social services like fire and police can remain intact. It's a small price to pay. Because the Fremont Fire, next time, can happen to YOU if we keep cutting back =========================================================== WOW, you sir are a moran... If you think that higher taxes and bigger debts will really help you then you need to go back to economics 101, or maybe 99. Higher taxes mean people don't have money to spend at the local markets, the markets go out of business then all you have is stores like "Walmart" and the likes. Is that what you really want? If so you're a corp tool just like the one in POTUS.

@crazytrain247: I'm going to lend you my sarcasm detector, then have you reread scoty's comment, then read my comment, directed at scoty. I know logic and reasoning are beyond you, seeing as you are clearly a teabagger and against all public education, even though you can't afford private education, but together, we can get you through this.

That's what happens when you budget for money you are begging someone else for instead of budgeting for your income. They are going to build a four billion dollar tunnel nobody wants and are crying because they don't have enough money to pay for necessary services??? Kill the tunnel = budget problem solved.

well may be she should stop flying around the state in planes and riding in limos that would help the budget she keeps wanting to cut everything but has she looked at her own expenses she should be force to take the bus like the rest of us

@scoty: just because it's your "god given right" to live 50 miles out in the suburbs and drive a 9 person SUV solo to work, doesn't mean the rest of us want to. The buses work just fine for me living in the city (and visiting the suburbs too). Can't speak for the ferries, but I would think the people that use them would probably vouch for them. I think we should stop the funding of new freeways and roads in the suburbs, because I don't personally use them, which means they are useless and therefore cut worthy.

framed--the state's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) doesn't specify clearly what the 5700 new jobs (FTE's) are but we know they are not cops, firefighters, and teachers because these jobs are not officially state jobs(with the exception of the state patrol) and so are not included in the report as state employees. Although the state may subsidize police, fire, and education, the payroll checks come directly from the local city, fire district, or school district and therefore the state doesn't account for them on their report.

Tubthug, your a little short, if it were 30 days, that would be $450,000 about a tenth of 1% of the amount needed. Baz, does that include cops, firefighters, teachers, snow plow drivers or just managers....just asking.

Lets start by having Governor Gregoire cut the 5700 additional state jobs she added just since taking office. These 5700 new jobs have added about $240 million dollars per year to state spending.

Let's see we need to find $480m short fall. Let's see 30 day special session @ $15,000 a day comes to $450m. If only our elected officals could do their job and not have to go into a special session this problem would be solved. Now wouldn't it!

By calling for a "special session" they all just get paid more of our money because they FAILED to get it right the first time...

I only ask because you have to be for something else if you are against what we have. Ok so Ferries are out, that saves abot 30$ of the operating cost since the rest is paid by riders. With Metro it saves 70% which is their subsidy but then they are not a state agency so I don't think it saves much at the state level. I think we are down to 2.9 billion. Welfare ok, how much should they contribute to the state deficit, give me a number. Mass transit improvements yes that will save something someday but not for a decade and then of course it will result in a loss of state revenue by reducing gasoline taxes.. Come on ditto heads, help me out here we need to balance the budget....

There she goes again, spending our money. That web site will not even be seen by her as I don't think that she even goes on a computer. She admitted that she does not watch tv and she said that while she was being interviewed on tv. She has no idea what is going on in the State.

How about we develope a mas transit system that people will use? Bus and HOV exits from the center of the fwy who are you kiding... How about istead of wasting that money we follow Portlands lead and revitalize neighborhoods at the same time. HWY 99 is a armpit. bulldoze the center 2 lanes and put in a lightrail system. Or better yet run it down the center of I-5. We keep funding a transit system that no one uses.

Start with the ferry system, and metro bus since they are out of control. Holding costly legaslative sessions will help? We can also cut some welfare programs. framed Not sure why your asking Republicans to budget the States mess, since Democrats have been in control since the early 80's in this State. Why should the Republicans/Tea Partiers clean up your mess? Regan did that after Carter, and so will someone else after your god Obama.
