PERUGIA, Italy -- A lawyer representing the family of a British college student slain in Italy is seeking $37 million in damages from an American and two other defendants accused in the 2007 killing.

Lawyer Francesco Maresca said in court Friday that the family of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher is seeking the compensation from Amanda Knox, of Seattle, co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito and Ivorian Rudy Hermann Guede, who was convicted in a separate trial. They all deny wrongdoing.

Prosecutors have asked the eight-member jury in Perugia, Italy, to give Knox and Sollecito a life sentence. A verdict is expected next week.

Kercher's body was found in the apartment she shared in the central Italian city of Perugia with Knox on Nov. 2, 2007. Prosecutors believe the Briton was the victim of a drug-fueled sex game.

Knox and Sollecito, who have been jailed since shortly after the slaying, were in court Friday, as well as their families.

After making his closing remarks, Maresca acknowledged to reporters that the three defendants would not be able to pay some $12 million each. He said the amount requested was "symbolic" because human life is invaluable.

Italian law allows plaintiffs to attach requests for civil damages to criminal proceedings.

During Friday's sessions, damages were sought also for Diya "Patrick" Lumumba -- a Congolese man who owns a Perugia pub where Knox worked and whom the American initially accused of being the killer. Because of her accusation, Lumumba was briefly jailed. He was later cleared and is seeking defamation damages from Knox.

Defense lawyers will make their closing arguments in the next sessions.

"The lawyers of the civil plaintiff are on the same side as the prosecutor, but with the same problem: they both lack evidence, " said Knox lawyer Carlo Dalla Vedova. "We are serene, and we are ready to explain our positions."

Nikrale, Harryrag has explained the significance of this damages claim in preventing the perpetrators of the murder from ever financially profitting from their crime, be it through publishing pulp fiction (like a certain Preston) or selling their story to some Hollywood mogol with his eye on the ALMIGHTY $. As their lawyer has explained the 25 million is a SYMBOL of the loss the Kerchers have suffered: NO SUM can be great enough to SYMBOLISE this loss. They do not ever hope to receive any money from the culprits of this hideous crime, but they want the world to know the depth of their loss and the impossibility of its ever being assuaged. No-one can wipe away Meredith's agonising death or the aftermath of grief and pain suufered now and for ever by her loved ones.

Nikrale, The Kerchers are not trying to profit from Meredith's murder and it is obscene and deeply offensive of you to accuse them of trying to. You need to read this sentence from the article carefully: "Maresca acknowledged to reporters that the three defendants would not be able to pay some $12 million each. He said the amount requested was "symbolic" because human life is invaluable." The Kerchers don't expect to receive any money from Guede and, if they are found guilty, Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito. Apart from being a symbolic gesture, the Kerchers have requested $12 million from anyone who is found guilty of Meredith's murder to prevent them from profiting by selling their story or writing a book. The Kerchers' lives have been shattered by the devastating loss of their daughter and sister. They have always conducted themselves with great dignity and grace. They have done nothing to deserve your malicious and venomous comments.

When a family does this it is so hard to have sympathy for them. Will millions of dollars bring back their child? I can almost see a point to it if it were some kind of accident that should have been prevented and somebody has to pay big to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else but not in a case like this. jatok if the laws in Italy are anything like ours you don't need to be found guilty in order to have a civil suit filed against you, Remember O.J. ?

They haven't been found guilty yet and so I'm not sure how they can sue this girl.

Good luck collecting. The vic's family should realize two important things - The perps are over age so if you are looking to collect from the families forget it. The second thing - is these perps will probably never make enough money for you to collect.
