PORTLAND -- A remarkably upbeat Bethany Storro described Thursday how a woman threw acid on her face, the pain it created, and the  process of recovery.

The parents of 28-year-old Storro of Vancouver, Wash., joined her Thursday for a news conference at at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland to talk about her injuries and the attack by an unknown woman now sought by police.

Storro said she went from celebrating her new job and her recent move to Washington state from Idaho, to agonizing pain as the skin on her face bubbled and sizzled and portions of her blouse disintegrated.

Doctors performed surgery on her face Wednesday night, removing dead skin from the areas that were most deeply injured.

Storro said she knew right away that the liquid was noxious. She looked down and saw her clothes start to dissolve, then heard the skin on her face "bubbling and sizzling."

Surgery Wednesday meant a face completely covered with bandages as she spoke to reporters at Legacy Emanuel.

Exhibiting an indomitable spirit, she spoke for about 20 minutes, sometimes laughing, sometime crying, using a tissue to dab at her eyes or nose, the only  part of her face not covered in bandages.

Storro said she held the press conference to draw attention to efforts to find the attacker, but also to talk about her faith.

"I'm here today because of Jesus Christ," she said.

The strength of her faith will allow her to move forward, Storro said, though several times she said that the attacker coming forward to admit what she had done would be an enriching part of that.

"I have no enemies," she said, "In time I'm going to forgive her. Then I can move on."

Storro said she wonders what could have gone through the attacker's mind as she prepared the acidic mixture to throw randomly on a stranger.

Her attacker was very non-descript as far as a potential suspect, she said, and fit in with the usual passersby of the Esther Park area of downtown Vancouver, Wash. At the moment of throwing the acid, she appeared to be in a rage.

That Monday, Storro said she had just picked up a paycheck and decided to buy a pair of sunglasses, even though she doesn't favor wearing them.

"For some reason I had this feeling that I needed to go buy some sunglasses," she said. They ultimately saved the vision of a woman who has been partially deaf since childhood. "That's Jesus for sure," she said.

"To be hard of hearing and blind.  That would drive them crazy," she said, laughing while motioning to her parents on either side of her.

Doctors have told her it's too early to tell how her recovery will go. The portions of her face that appear green in photographs were the most damaged and may result in scar tissue, or possibly need grafts from the skin on her leg.

Her surgery was basically one massive face peel, she said. She could have waited for the skin to heal more, or have it done right away.

She has been in a great deal of pain, both physically and emotionally. Her family and hospital staff have been kind and supportive. As she would become frustrated, she realized "there's nobody to get mad at. Everyone is so nice to me."

Support via emails and letters have come from all over the world, Storro said, dabbing her eyes as she described how she would move along in life.

"It's not about looks," Storro said.

THE NIGHT OF THE ATTACK

Her mother Nancy Neuwelt said her daughter was near Esther Short Park, about 8th and Columbia, around 7:30 p.m. She was getting something out of the passenger side of her car before heading into a Starbucks.

A woman walked up to her and said "hey pretty girl, do you want to drink thi?." The woman threw the liquid onto her face and ran off, Neuwelt said.

Storro stumbled about in pain and fell to the ground screaming. A passerby called police using Storro's cellphone.

Police said the attacker was an African-American woman. Neuwelt said her daughter described the suspect as having slicked-back hair in a ponytail and was wearing a green top and khaki pants.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Vancouver Police Tip Line at (360) 487-7399.

Neuwelt called the attack "an act of evil."

Her brother Abraham Neuwelt posted this on his Facebook page:

"I am so disgusted with society right now! Yesterday my little sister got some form of acid thrown into her face while walking through downtown Vancouver, WA. She is currently in the hospital with severe burns and could face permanent damage. This incident was totally unprovoked and malicious in nature. If you belie...ve in prayer, now is the time to ask for a full recovery and that the assailant be brought to justice! I love you Beese!!"

I don't care WHAT the perpetrator's color, race, nationality, or point of origin is. Or if she had a "bad childhood," or if this was just a one-person "get whitey" agenda. The only thing that matters is that this sicko whack-job be permanently removed from society. She has forfeited her right to live amongst the civilized.

"human beings are not capable of true forgiveness": What are you talking about? Not everyone is vengeful and spiteful. Try on some critical thinking skills. Of course not everyone is vengeful. My comment reflects the idea that it is fantasy to think you have forgiven someone - a fantasy that dovetails well with the whole christian version of wishful thinking. One can refuse to be drug down by vengeful thoughts or hateful thoughts, and I certainly admire greatly those who do. But all it requires is simple (albeit difficult)human courage, not some monumental and long-standing fantasy.

washingtonapple - you are a wise apple. However, human beings are not capable of true forgiveness and this woman's anger at her attacker is simply being suppressed and will eventually manifest. Right now, it gives her spiritual succor to pretend she has forgiven this woman - and it IS a pretense. True forgiveness says there is no attacker and no victim. It does NOT say "you did this to me, but I forgive you." That's a mental manipulation only - and it makes folks feel better. You don't get anywhere (but more deluded) by denying your simple human nature and the feelings it engenders (but which you don't need to take as gospel, no pun intended - we still have choice when it comes to acting on those feelings). After 2,000 years, religious folk still don't seem to understand that.

Its all too obvious to most people that aren't addicted to some sort of religion that those who are always attribute anything that happens that they perceive as fortunate as an act of their chosen deity. And if its bad then its dismissed with statements like "the lord works in mysterious ways" or "its the work of Satan" or some other meaningless reasoning that absolves their god from any responsibility. It seems very deluded to non-believers and free thinkers, but despite that there is no denying that it gives many religious folks comfort. Right now this woman can use all the comfort she can get, and if forgiving her attacker later on helps her move on, simply because she believes its what her god would want, then that's even better for her. I do however hope her attacker is found by the real world police and prosecuted for this.

To OldjBear: I would never render medical attention to her by putting water in her face. If it was not acid and was something that intensified the damages by putting water on it, I would feel terrible. I think the passerby did the right thing by calling 911. It's so scary to think that you could be minding your own business and someone is having a bad day and scars you for life. It sure seems like people are becoming more crazy every year. Check out the hospital ER psych wards. They are full of new people daily.

Crediting a make-believe concept instead of skilled surgeons may not be "sheer evil" but it's incredibly stupid nonetheless.

Some of you ask WHY is there so much evil today. Well for one thing Jesus came so that we all could be saved from our sins, and Satan is unleashing his power wherever he can because as scripture says...the days are evil. We have turned everyone to their own way and the Lord has laid on Jesus the iniquity of us all. We have said "God go away we don't need you or want you anymore. We don't believe in you anymore. You are archaic and out dated. Everyone has made up their own rules and are looking out only for themselves instead of putting others first. We have become a nation (and world) of self-centered selfish individules wanting what we want when we want it. Spoiled brats is what we as a nation have become and so has the world. We ALL need to humble ourselves and get down on our knees before Almighty God and beg Him for forgivness. Mock and jeer all you want to but one day at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and tongue will confess that HE is LORD!

There is evil in this world and bad things happen to good people as well as to bad people. Consequences happen when bad people do bad things even to good people and God doesn't always protect us from evil. What is it with people who seem to think that Jesus is some sort of Santa Claus who should prevent people from getting hurt or from failures in life???? No one is exempt from bad things happening. Not even Christians. The ONLY difference is as Christians we have the abillity to forgive as Christ has forgiven us. Jesus suffered for all man's sins once for all time. And it is IN HIM that we move and live and have our being. If we suffer we share in His sufferings. If we are persecuted we are persecuted for righteousness sake. We are to pray for our enemies and do good to them that persecute us. NOT EASY for anyone not even for us Christians. But, Jesus enables us to forgive those who trespass against us. I have forgiven others because my joy is in Jesus - not in this life

And just what is civilized about throwing acid in someones face? Moreso doing it to a stranger who has no idea as to why. This type of person deserves absolutly no mercy and dropping her in a vat of acid would be poetic justice.

OK...dropping her in a vat of acid is a little too extreme I must admit, after all we are a 'civilized' society, for the most part. But 10 years in a correctional facility would seem appropriate.

You can pray all you want...but that 'African-American' should be dropped into a vat of acid. It never ceases to amaze me how there is so little respect for life and law within this community. Why? Don't know...weren't we all created equal? Didn't a whole lot of American soldiers die in the Civil War to abolish slavery? Why does the crime-wave of today have to be? Why is there such anger? I can't find a logical answer.

I find it difficult to express my disdain for the woman who attacked this lady. Why oh why do people feel such a need to lash out at just anyone in an attempt to vent their own anger. Condemn me if you will but I would love to be the one who metes out the punishment if the attacker is apprehended and convicted at trial. The one thing that I did not see in the report on this story was what if any actions were taken by passers by to render first aid to the victim. Copious amounts of clean water should have been applied immediately to dilute and hopefully wash away that acid. Such action would lessen the burning so I hope someone was wise enough to do just that immediately. Get well and good luck to Beth Storro. God Bless you and continue to hold you close Girl!

This is horrible. It shows the evilness that grows in the heart of man. Jesus said the world would get more and more evil towards the end. I pray she recovers quickly, with minimal scaring, and doesn't need a skin graft. I also pray whoever did this will be convicted in their heart of what they have done. I pray the will repent and ask for mercy from Jesus. The victim would ask the same. I also pray the victim have minimal pain.
