TACOMA, Wash. – A Pierce County jury has found Latanya Clemmons guilty Thursday of helping the alleged getaway driver after her brother, Maurice, murdered four Lakewood, Wash. police officers last November.

Latanya was on trial for helping Darcus Allen elude police. The jury found her guilty on two counts of rendering criminal assistance and not guilty on two counts of the same charge.

Maurice shot and killed Sergeant Mark Renninger and Officers Tina Griswold, Ron Owens and Greg Richards in a coffee shop on Nov. 29, 2009. He was killed two days later by a Seattle police officer.

Prosecutors say Latanya did not help plan or carry out the murders. They say she paid for Allen's hiding place in a hotel and bought him a bus ticket to Arkansas after the shooting.

Latanya's attorney says that when she was helping Allen, she didn't know he was wanted by police.

The split verdict was a victory for one of the victim’s relatives.

“She’s going to serve prison time and I’m happy about that,” said Beth DeLong, Griswold's sister-in-law.

Prosecutors say they will ask the judge for the maximum of 10 years in prison for Latanya when she is sentenced next Thursday. She could have faced up to 20 if convicted on all four counts.

Six other people, including Allen, are charged in connection with the murders. Allen faces four counts of aggravated first-degree murder and could face the death penalty if convicted.

I feel that there are alot of people that have thoughts about the situation thats on hand but antill u live everyday when the police act like they dont want to do there job anymore but have negative behavior toward people on the street because they have a badge. Im not saying she was right or anyone need to die but if u dont know what its like to be harrased by the police then u will never understand what people go through.Life is hard everday just getting up and going to work everyday and trying to make it home in one peace know a days. I just think that the law isnt like it used to be yeah kids have got out of control but there r some good ones still out here and all they want to do is be safe and they cant be safe when the police is on the streets acting like the gangs that r around....

thewizardofahhs, Correct me if I'm wrong but according to the article, she's charged with rendering criminal assistance to the get away driver, who is of no relation. So wouldn't it then not be reduced?

What needs to change is the perception that serving time isn't so bad. Here's a thought...rather than change laws for sentencing, let's change the rules for "gray bar" hotel itself. 1. Sentences are served as issued, no early out for anything other than death. 2. No perks. No TV, no classes, no fitness centers, no playing cards, board games, computers, sporting equipment, or any other means of entertainment. 3. ALL visits conducted with the old plastic wall between convict and visitor. 4. Limit phone calls to one per day on the pre-paid phone system. 5. Charge all visitors for the pleasure of spending time with their loved one...hefty "visitation" fee and a parking fee for any space within a mile. Public defenders exempt. This would have to start with the dusty robes of the Supreme Court by clearly defining "cruel and unusual" as the absence of three walls, a roof, a pot to pi$$ in, and access to some sort of nourishment.

thewizardofahhs- she was actully convicted of rendering assistance to the guy who drove her brother, which will still be the felony- however she will not be eligible to be sentenced to the 20 yrs b/c the sentencing ranges depend on your criminal history. For each Felony conviction as a juv, its 1/2 pt. For each felony as an adult its 1 pt. Let's say she has 3 pts, then she would only be able to be sentenced 15-20 months. Even at the high end, which is 9 pts or more- its only 60 months (5 yrs). Not sure where the news got she is eligible to be sentenced up to 20 yrs. 99% of the time, even when convicted of multiple counts, the judges run sentences concurrent, meaning at the same time. So in all reality, the most she could get is 5 yrs, and probably about 1/3 of that off if she behaves. I doubt she sees more than a year or so in jail for this. Sad, but true.

Latanya Clemmons' attorney says she did it, but unknowingly. She says when she was helping Allen hide, she didn't know he was wanted by police, she thought he was just playing an extreme game of Hide-n-Seek with this buddies.

Doesn't face 20 years no matter what. She's a relative therfore its a gross misdemeanor. See the RCW. RCW 9A.76.070 Rendering criminal assistance in the second degree. (b) Rendering criminal assistance in the first degree is a gross misdemeanor if it is established by a preponderance of the evidence that the actor is a relative as defined in RCW 9A.76.060. Maximum penalty its 1 year and/or $5000 for each count (see below) RCW 9A.20.021 Maximum sentences for crimes committed July 1, 1984, and after. (2) Gross misdemeanor. Every person convicted of a gross misdemeanor defined in Title 9A RCW shall be punished by imprisonment in the county jail for a maximum term fixed by the court of not more than one year, or by a fine in an amount fixed by the court of not more than five thousand dollars, or by both such imprisonment and fine. That means she faces 2 years and/or $10,000 because she was guilty on two counts.

blackhand - Don't you know? People hear what they want to hear, people read what they want to read. People believe what they NEED to believe in order for them to be right with them self. You call it ignorance, I call it perception. There is no truth, only our perception, and each person has their own version of the "truth". It's my perception that your version of the "truth" is what it is, sounds like you almost feel Clemons was a hero, that is Sad to me.

wow I'm surprised with the amount of ignorant comments. It makes me sick that people are so blind to the truth these days. you are spoon fed from day one to believe that these people who are sworn to protect you actually will, when in reality it is nothing but a job to them. It's not like the old days when kids grew up wanting to be police officers just to help people and generally be a good person, these people are criminals with a badge period. you think now that one person is going to jail all the violence against the crooked police is going to stop? I think this is just a stepping stone to the future, stop and think about all the innocent people the police harass and arrest unconstitutionally on a daily basis. Clemmons most likely saved more lives then he took.

Would the defendant please rise. You have been found guilty by a jury of your peers. By the powers invested in me, I hereby sentence you to a maximum of 10 years in prison to commence effective immediately. Bailiff, remove the prisoner from the courtroom. This court is adjourned.

She should get at least five years. Imagine living with people who break the law on a daily basis. When your brother shows up with a gunshot wound and even the music stations are talking about the shooting how can you sit there and say I had no idea.

I hate the complete BS lies that she did not know. Given the dushbags criminal record, when he showed up with a gunshot wound, what the heck else could he have been involved in that he got shot. Too bad this one is getting off with a max of ten years.

I truly did not think they could proved she knowingly rendered criminal assistance. I thought it was going to be a waste of resources. I was wrong and I am glad I was. Now they can punish her for her role in this whole big mess.
