SEATTLE – First Lt. Robert Bennedsen was a star high school athlete and graduate of Seattle University. Now the community of Vashon Island is mourning the loss of the 25-year-old. His family just learned he died in Afghanistan.

"I would call him high energy. 60 miles an hour would not be fast enough for Robert," says his aunt, Bonnie Bennedsen.

His family says Bennedsen was larger than life. He was a wrestling and football star at Vashon High.

"His energy was terrific," says his grandmother, Betty Bennedsen.

His family says from an unusually early age, Robert was dedicated volunteer firefighter.

"He was the youngest person in the state of Washington to be approved to train other fireman, before he was out of high school. He was committed to public service," says his aunt.

That commitment and respect for his grandfather, a World War II pilot, led him to join the Army.

"He went down to see [his grandfather's uniform in the basement," says his grandmother. "Of course I told him, 'Robert when you're ready, you can have that. You can have his wings.' and he was very happy."

Bennedsen had just started his deployment in Afghanistan a few weeks ago when an ambulance in his convoy hit an IED.

"Robert got out of his vehicle to assist and see what he could do, and it was our understanding that he stepped on an IED," says Bonnie Bennedsen.

His family on Vashon Island just learned of his death last night. As fire stations on the island fly their flags at half staff, his grandparents proudly display theirs at their West Seattle home.

"It's hard to believe because it doesn't seem real," says his grandmother.

I was friends with Rob in Germany. My husband Charlie worked with Rob. I was there when he first got to his first duty station at 2SCR. He was full of life. He was always telling us about fire fighting, or his scuba diving expeditions. There was never a dull moment with Rob! And he was such an honest man. He definitely lived up to the values that a good soldier does. Rob came to Germany not knowing what to think. He was determined to make the best of his tour there. He not only made the best of it, he made it look easy to be sent to a country with no friends or family. He quickly made friends and family there. To the Bennedsen family, my husband and I want to send our deepest condolences.

I grew up with The Bennedsen family in the Burien area.. If he was anything like his dad and grandfather he was one hell of a good man... Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family... D&K H

I only hung out with Robert a few times but all the times I did he was a happy, out going, funny, and all around great guy and I am so proud to have even met him. To his mom Tracy who was my school bus driver for many years, you raised a wonderful son and I am so sorry for your lost. Love you all, Randi Gibbons.

God Bless Robert Bennedsen, I did not know him but I admire him and the family that made him the hero he is. God Bless him, I'll do my best to be at McChord when he comes home.

Robert Bennedsen is my cousin. I do not know him very well - mostly from my aunt (his grandmother) telling me about various things about him over the years (such as this past Spring when she told me that he was being deployed to Afghanistan) - but family is family regardless of how well they know each other. Robert's death affects my family in ways that those who don't know that kind of tragic loss can't possibly understand. Robert's death is a tragedy to not only the family but also his friends, his fellow soldiers, loved ones and those who knew him only in passing. Both my uncle (Robert's grandfather) and my grandfather served in the military and although I do not support the war, I do support the soldiers who put their lives on the line regardless if they are serving overseas or on U.S. soil. Those of you who choose to say hateful and inappropriate things should be ashamed of yourselves.

Thanks King-5 for responding so quickly to my complaint about the first posting. In less than a minute it was gone. I am opposed to these wars too, but what this person posted was cruel and inappropriate. I knew Robert from when he I was an assistant football coach at McMurray Middle School. He was a great, hardworking kid and I am so sorry for his family's loss. This is not the time for political grandstanding. Family and friends just lost their son, their brother, their buddy. Please pray for the family's recovery. And to that first poster, pray you someday find compassion.

Thank you for removing that comment. To the person that wrote that you will get yours for having no compassion. If u dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything at all. Think of his family and the lose and pain they are feeling. I would like to tear you a new one with words but I will hold back, because Karma will get you!!!!!! RIP we will miss you and you were a great man, so many people respected you so much!!!! Thank you for your service
