VANCOUVER – Police shot and killed a man in Vancouver early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Police said the man was armed with a handgun and threatened officers around 3:30 a.m. They said the confrontation occurred near the intersection of 4th Plain Blvd. and Fruit Valley Road, just west of downtown Vancouver.

"I think I heard at least six or eight loud booms. I wasn't aware it was going on, especially in this neighborhood," said Sarah Selby, who lives nearby.  "It was chaotic, there was muffled yelling and screaming."

"The male subject was engaging in threatening activity and was refusing police officer commands. The officers on scene fired at the subject, striking him," said Kim Kapp, a spokeswoman for the Vancouver Police Department.

The suspect died at the scene and police seized his handgun for evidence.

His name has not yet been released.

Neighbors told KGW that the man was 23 years old and a member of the military and had just returned from Iraq.

No officers were injured.

Three blocks of Fruit Valley Road were blocked off during the investigation.

Proposed new law- If a cop shoots an individual without justifiable cause, he must be himself shot with the same weapon in the and is not eligible for union, unemployment, or pension. No benefits will be given at all. If the individual dies and the cop is in the wrong then they should be executed with the same weapon in the same manner. It is only fair since they are so trigger happy, before they are allowed to use a tazor gun they have to go through the same thing why not a handgun.

I just read that they've identified publicly the identity of this young man. Just having gotten back from a year serving our country in Iraq.....what exactly did this kid threaten? The story says he was holding a gun but does not say if it was aimed, raised, etc.? The public needs to know, his loved ones need to know, his fellow soldiers need to know. Why was it necessary to shoot him? Why was it deemed necessary to shoot to kill him? Why shoot the kid "multiple" times?? What in the HELL is wrong with this state???????????? Elsewhere it says it is highly likely the boy had PTSD due to his service in the war in Iraq..does anyone take a persons sacrifice into account anymore? This is abhorrent! I am sickened by this brute force constantly in this state! God help his poor mother and little brother...if anyone noticed, a poster below has mentioned knowing them, and their grief.

WISE up AMERICA..... you are so DUMB. Warrants aren't typically served during the day because they are meant to SURPRISE the suspects (i.e. hours when they may be sleeping). This is done because most people do not have time to arm themselves. Maybe you should refrain from incoherent comments unless they are FACTS. Such rumors spread like wildfire and you are helping no cause. Any one in their right mind that wanted to see their family at the end of the night woud have expressed deadly force when threatened with a firearm. If you have a family, I think you would do the same. If not..... I am sorry for your family, because you are a gutless coward...... Hence, Darwin's Theory of 'Survival of the Fittest'....... and you obviously didn't make the cut.

The story I read from another site was the man was in his home, police serving a search warrant in the middle of the night. Dead man drew back the blinds to look outside with a gun in his hand and the officer shot him. That is the story I read. The man has a right to have a gun in his hand in his home when he hears anything outside in the middle of the night. Any criminal could get a few of the boys to stand outside your house and yell we are the police and come in and kill your family. Who says the man made threatening moves? The cops. What threatening moves? He is back from Iraq and did not get a shot off?? I don't think so! We don't want to do away with the cops, don't be stupid. We don't want citizens getting shot for no good reason. The man shot was not who the warrant was for. This was a bad choice from the start by police. They could have waited till day time. The Seattle man did nothing wrong. He was breaking no law for the officer to enforce.

Yessir-What is wrong with you that you can't argue a point anymore? Every post you place is a personal attack against someone with whom you disagree. Try addressing issues instead of mentally masturb* while feeling like you have made a point. You haven't. You've merely revealed your true desire to bully in order to stop debate. You are the problem. You have made up your (tiny little) mind and don't want to be confused by data. I'm sorry that you are so insecure that you can't tolerate people who actually are gifted with the ability to "think outside the box". Sucks to be you I know, but stop your fascist tactics. I have tolerated your personal attacks for too long without returning the favor. If you want to disagree, great, but USE EVIDENCE OR LOGIC. Otherwise, go back to your pathetic, lonely existence and respect others' freedom to have their own beliefs.

What's to debate here...."the man was armed with a handgun and threatened officers", nothing. The man made a poor choice to be armed and threaten police. Law abiding citizens have every right to stay alive and safe, if you threaten others or police you need to expect to suffer consequences. Police have to make decisions in seconds or they themselves risk death or serious injury. The police are upholding the law and trying to keep citizens safe with the resources they have. People are breaking laws or acting like they might harm others, so don't do these things and we all will stay safe and alive, end of story, no debate. It's too bad some make poor choices, just look at our jails, full of people who make poor choices.

telman, you are right that Washington is fast becoming a Nazi state, but we should all remember that Nazis are National Socialists, the National Socialist Labor Party. Archetypal Nazis are Socialists (liberals) who want to empower government to control all our lives, but who are just a little less totalitarian than Stalinist Russia. We should not be surprised that police state Gestapo murder on the streets has become a daily way of life under National Socialist Labor (big government power) liberals.

I have known this man since he was born, he was a good kid, very loving and kind hearted. We expected his death to be caused by serving for his country not by the law in his hometown. Was it really necessary to shoot to kill him and so many times? The cops are really gun happy anymore. I think this could of been prevented and he could of been talked down, instead of rushing in and shooting him. This is a terrible loss, and his mother is in a bad state because of this, him and his little brother is all she had. He was her everything. I think the cops that shot him should be reprimanded for what they have done. He fought for us and in thanx he gets shot???

@chinmusic, Officers are trained to shoot to stop, not kill. If the suspect appears to still pose a danger then the officer is justified in using more than a single shot or double tap.

Washingtonian - youre on. I will take that bet, but lets get some issues ironed out. A tasered death doesnt count. Thats just bad luck. Death in a police chase also doesnt count unless inocent bystanders are killed in the pursuit. Multiple gunshots should count double. Do park and wilddlife wardens count? I will give you wounded, winged and clipped.

Without law enforcement, how many more innocent people are going to die at the hands of criminals? Without police, the streets will be crawling with people who will be out getting something for nothing (namely your hard-earned money) and shootings without any fear of being caught? How many real thugs (like the people who don't want any cops here) will there be invading your homes and society?

The soldier was in less danger in the war in Iraq than on the streets of America. In Iraq they only have a few terrorists, and the government opposes them. In American we have terrorist gangs roaming our streets killing young soldiers and everyone else they can find to kill. How many dead will it take before the people begin to fight back against the terrorist gangs that roam American streets and murder soldier and civilian alike?

This is just a complete tragedy. Maybe if the police knew he had just returned from Iraq, this could have been handled differently, but of course, we don't live in a perfect world. And to all the people who are are saying he was an idiot...he wasn't. You should be ashamed of yourself for saying that. He was a good kid and a hero, who served his time defending this country for you. Really, is that how you support our troops who come home and may be suffering from PTSD? We don't know what led up to this incident or what his state of mind was when the police surrounded him, lights blazing and guns drawn. I don't think he was out to hurt anyone though. This kid has a family who love him more than you know and my heart goes out to them.

King 5 -- Little over a week ago a man was shot and killed by the police in Seattle. The police report did not match the eye witnesses reports. The man is now buried and we still have not heard a peep from the coroner. PCD (Preliminary cause of death) has been established, yet your paper and news division is withholding the report. Why is that?

It's not the Police that are out of control it's our society. If your a law abiding person you have respect and high regard for our Police. If you not on the side of the law then you end up making comments like some of the one's like I see here. The first thing we all need to do is not jump on any band wagon till after the fact are in and not just react to a news report.

At least King 5 is accurately reporting that the account of what happened in this story is what the police "say" happened. As opposed to Seattle newspapers who have taken the police version of the story and posted it as though these were all verified facts.

amandaholder, the reason why I was driving in the dark: 1) I was in a very well lit parking lot, leaving the grocery store, 2) the freeway exit was just a few blocks and the streets were very well lit up in Parkland, 3) by the time I made my turn to the freeway, it was dark and I had realized I had to turn on my lights! Obviously I still have cat eyes! The cop happened to be around the corner and was very mean for no reason at all! So learn to know what the situation is before babbling out of ignorance. FYI, the cops are getting just plain meaner. I am almost 60 and I can remember the days when cops were more friendly and talked to you civilly for traffic violations. Now even a child would be afraid of cops!!! Of course there are a lot more crime, but the cops are abusing their power! And getting CAUGHT!!!!!!!!!! Nothing was mentioned that kid fired shots! What a waste of a soldier's life!

"Couldn't they have just shot the knife out of their hand?"....Umm...this is REAL LIFE - not Hollywood. I don't believe that is is the "police in this state" who are "out of control". It comes down to society in general. Police are there to maintain order in society, and it is their sworn duty to protect and serve the public. This may be as simple as recovering a stolen bicycle to a crying child, or as complicated and controversial as taking a human life. I make the conscious decision to try to live as normal a life as possible, and I don't choose to roam city streets in the early morning hours armed with a potentially deadly weapon. If you make the decision to ignore the commands of an officer, then you run the risk of paying the consequences. How about a new saying to keep in mind...."Listen And Live".

What happened to the rubber bullets, mace, stun guns, and other non lethal techniques? Would you have been more pleased if this young man had not been stopped and went on to injure/kill others? If things had ended that way, would you be critical that law enforcement didn't do more to stop this young man? P.S.~Not wise to drive in the dark without lights on. You should be glad that someone had to remind you to do the obvious before you injured or killed another.

At that point no one can scream to loud when someone attacking you or stealing your property gets sent away with all the copper jacketed lead they can carry. Kind of like the old west, an armed society is a polite society. *** Is that what you had in mind bob?

Cathyinwa1 young soldiers have been fighting and dying since the first roman centurion, and in the U.S. during the civil war, and WW1 some soldiers were as young as 12, that does'nt make it right but thats the way it is. In this guys case there may have been many other factors involved, we don't know.

Those of you bashing the young soldier must not have a son or nephew or grandson. Young adults from ages 18-25 should not be fighting in wars. That's when they are the most impressionable. In the old days, they had mature men fighting the wars because they knew that it can mess up young soldier's minds. That police should've gotten back-up and they should've used chemical bombs. If it was necessary, he could've shot him in the leg. Too many "HUMAN BEINGS" are killed by the police, even with a taser. Those of you who congradulate the police are probably the police or relatives of one..I say end this blood shed. So what if it costs taxpayers' money to help these people who sacrificed their lives to protect USA's people. After all, that is the small price we can pay to show our appreciation for our soldiers. And no, I am not a criminal but was treated like one when I forget to put my headlights on. And guess what? I found out later that cop got shot. Gee, I wonder why?

Here at home the government gun thugs kill men in the street without reason or remorse. If he wanted to survive he should have stayed in the war zone.

With so many violence targeting police around here during the last year, one can't blame them for being overly cautious (i.e. more protective of themselves a.k.a. shoot first). That said, it's no excuse for them to just shoot any and everyone, which they are NOT doing. So, just to be safe, if you have any issues with them just take it up with the judge. Don't give them any excuse to pump you full of lead.

Ok, I guess all police, no longer consider the "Suicide by Cop" scenario, so all anyone with suicidal thoughts, have to do now, is act all threatening to the gestapo cops, to have them kill you dead, yep... I can see ALL the crazies out there, using this as a solution. As for tacwilster's comment, all a family of the decedent, has to do now, is file a lawsuit against the city and/or state, costing a lot more to pay out period, not to mention, all the bad press that it will entail.

People sticking up for thugs and criminals are thugs and criminal themselves. They benefit from no cops and no law enforcement so they can do what they want. Thank you for removing the scum from the rest of us wanting to live peaceful lives.

Killing the people is NOT the same as "protecting" the people. We the people do not want pigs who murder another man every day. Murder for hire is NOT supposed to be the reason that blue shirt gangs exist.

Day after day. Murder after murder. How many dead men will it take before the people wake up and demand that the blue gun thugs stop the killings?

How "Not" To Get Shot By Police: DON'T COMMIT VIOLENT CRIMES.I know this seems elementary, but this rule is lost on many. They do the crime, get shot, and then wonder how it could possibly happen. They whine that it is so unfair.Well, violent crime, like jumping in front of moving cars, is just a high risk occupation. DON'T RUN AWAY FROM THEM.I know it's hard to believe, but that may make them think you're guilty of something. Hiding in bushes or closets makes some cops very nervous. They might even foolishly conclude that you're up to no good! DON'T MAKE FAST MOVEMENTS WITH YOUR HANDS.I know it sounds silly, but grabbing a shiny beer can or a dark colored wallet may make police officers mistakenly believe that you are about to hurt them. DON'T POINT IT AT THE COPS. We all know that you're basically a nice person, but that may be lost on the police officers confronting you. They may even believe they need to protect themselves.

This is the best thing ever happened to this state, it will reduce the cost of trials, jail, medical, education expense all of us tax paying, law abiding citizens have to pay. Keep up the good work and take more of these criminals off the streets. Thank you for a job well done.

I agree with quackula - do what you're supposed to do when ordered by LE, and you won't have a problem! Otherwise, you're taking your chances, and usually you'll lose.

Something isn't right about this... I suspect the cop fired first, and planted the gun later.

I have no fear of the police of killing me. Why? 1. I pull over when they flash their lights at me. 2. I obey their orders. 3. I don't act confrontational such as a physical or verbal abuse. 4. I don't pull my gun on them or any other weapon. If you disagree with what they are doing you can take their badge number down and file a complaint. These are not hard to follow people.

I don't know what happened, but in general pulling a gun on a cop in the middle of the night is a bad idea and can be dangerous to your health.

Armed with what? What type of threat? Was killing him the only answer? And people wonder why I am so anti-social, People, it is becoming more & more like a war zone out there or Steven King novel which ever you perfer. Cop killing citizen, citzens killing cops, parents killing their own babies, and the Federal Government trying to convince us everything is fine while they continue to try to take our freedoms away.. Who do we trust? Who do we fear?

Why don't people learn? If you make a police officer fear for his life he's going to defend him/her self, just like you and I would. We don't pay our law enforcement officers to be targets, or punching bags. We pay them to enforce our laws, we hold them accountable if they fail to do so. My heart goes out to the people that lost a friend or relative in this terrible situation. But my heart goes out to the officers involved, thy will be put through hell over this and have to live with it for the rest of their lives. Most of the people that die at the hands of law enforcement are either high or drunk, both by their choice. It's a matter of personal responsibility to not put yourself in this position. "Gee I was drunk/high" isn't an excuse to get stupid.

Yea one less idiot in the pool. You don't even know what happend yet. Yes the man was aremed with his left arm and his right. The police will release more info after they all get thier story straight. If the man had a gun they would have said so. If the man had a knife they may hold off on saying that. I listenend to the news over the week end and the state police officer said one thing that was true. " We are law enforcement officers." The man whittling had broken no law he was minding his own. What law was SPD officer enforcing? Again they are to enforce the law not harass citizens. Unless you break the law they have no authority to ask what you are doing. Hitler and the KGB would be proud.
