Trash piling up in the University District

SEATTLE - Homeowner Pat Bluemel says his idyllic neighborhood looks more like a dump these days. It's gotten so ridiculous he takes pictures so friends don't think he's exaggerating.

"In a 10-block radius, from 45th to 55th, we counted 15 discarded couches," he said.

There's also soiled mattresses, old TVs, open trash and even clothes.

"It's kind of frustrating for me as I pay my property taxes and such that I'm cleaning up everybody's junk," he said.

Those "everybodies" are university students who move in for one year and are out the next.

"They just probably think if they leave it here it's not their problem anymore," says University of Washington senior Claire Welly.

Welly may be right. John Sherburn has lived here for 10 years and every year he's forced to clean up what someone else dumped on his property, and that's not all.

"Stuff like TV sets the kids will come by and they're a little drunk and they'll just pick it up and break it for no reason," he said.

The city tells us it has cracked down on this type of behavior, sending enforcement officers this time of year to cite people who dump.

But landlord Gerry Goldman says the whole process is flawed, because it's hard to catch people in the act.

"I resent the fact that the city makes us responsible for what other people do," said Goldman.

So as an owner, Goldman is forced to pay the fine or get movers to haul away the trash.

" We the tax payers foot the bill for those pieces that are left out on the street," he said.

Bluemel says he's worried less about the cost, and more about what this says about this generation.

"It kind of concerns me about future leaders, that they can just discard things and move on."

The city says the dumping is happening earlier than usual this year, but this is nothing new. They plan however, to talk to the University about better ways to encourage students to dump the right way.

The City of Seattle encourages residents to call in illegal dumping at 206-684-CITY.

I love the ol' 'Move to Sammamish' fall back, it's cute, but tired. As a rule abiding citizen in the city, I should be able to enjoy a trash free neighborhood, whereever I live. And for the record, the furniture is not just left on the lawn, the 'kids' move it just far enough way from where they are living so that it's not associated with them. On the sidewalk, street, it doesn't matter. They are being lazy and really have the mindset that someone else will deal with it. As our future, yes I am gravely concerened that this is the mindset, I always thought that god would strike me down if I didn't follow a rule, this generation really doesn't have that engrained anymore sadly.

Landlords in the area tend to be little more than slum-lords. They give tenants only a day or two to clean up, and maintain only a tiny dumpster for an entire building so that there is no room for trash. Don't blame the kids, what else are they gonna do? Hire a garbage truck for like 100 bucks, or just leave the thing on the side of the road where someone walking by might pick up and use it? What really needs to happen is a Move-In Rummage sale over in the farmer's market parking lot, where moving-out residents can sell their stuff to the kids that are moving in.

While I certainly understand the frustration of the homeowners that live in the immediate vicinity of UW--they live in the immediate vicinity of UW. I am not excusing illegal dumping in any way, but this is a college kids' neighborhood. It has been for a lot longer than these guys have lived there. College kids are sometimes irresponsible jerks. There's a lot of trash in my neighborhood, too. Living in a city has many perks, but it also has its downfalls--trash being one of them. If you can't deal, move to Sammamish.

He says "it kind of concerns me about future leaders, that they can just discard things and move on." Uh.... do you know where your garbage goes? Even your recycling: do you know where it goes, and how much really gets recycled? Do you? How many cars have we all owned? How many TVs? Instant dinners? We start this process in our lives with disposable diapers. We live in a society where we ALL discard almost everything and then move on. I'm not saying this is right, but get a clue, these kids are only doing what we raised them to do.

An obligatory dump fee should be mandated as part of the deposite . M.A.C

Dump the right way. Not in the right of way. I suspect the students haul their trash outside so that they don't have to pay a cleaning fee to their landlords. The student's landlords should be responsible for hauling away the trash.
