NEW YORK  -- Hostess Brands Inc., the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, is filing for bankruptcy protection, blaming troubles with its pension and medical benefits obligations, increased competition and tough economic conditions.

The Chapter 11 filing on Wednesday comes just two years after a predecessor company emerged from bankruptcy proceedings.

The privately held Irving, Texas bakery company says it will be able to maintain routine operations thanks to a $75 million financing commitment from a group of lenders.

Reports had surfaced earlier in the week that the company was planning to make such a filing.

Hostess said that it will look to restructure into a "strong, competitive" company. It will continue to run bakeries, outlet stores and distribution centers and deliver its goods during the process.

Hostess operates in 49 states.

Whole Foods is too expensive, PCC is too weird, and Twinkies are flat out delicious.

This is definiely a sign of the trend of people becoming healthier. People should be more aware of what they eat and shop at more organic stores like Whole Foods or PCC.

@dirtydon: Some of us would still eat that junk if it didn't go directly to our waistlines! And this is probably an indication that they shouldn't have used all those preservatives in the Twinkies. In tough times, people start eating the ones they've stockpiled on the pantry shelf instead of buying fresh ones!

Good thing Twinkies have a shelf-life of forever. Better stock up on Twinkies before they're all gone!

Dirty Don, Not as many sold in the past 4 years. More are not eating the sweet treats and that one reasons... it stated "increased competition and tough economic conditions".... Sara lee is now in the bread business, other companies are trying to cut sodium levels and making healthier breads, Im having to watch my sodium intake, that leaves me eating flour and corn tortillas. The max intake should be lower than 1500 milligrams daily, Even corn flakes have 200 mg per serving ( 1/2 cup ).

That's the difference between unions in private businesses vs unions in government. When unions in private businesses get out of control and refuse to renegotiate to keep businesses profitable, the businesses can file for bankruptcy which automatically voids all union contracts and either starts over or goes out of business. What happens in government when unions are intransigent? The government raises taxes, fees and tolls on everyone. Sound familiar Washington State with what is now going on down in Olympia?

This is now common practice. File for bankruptcy, renegotiate contracts, renege on pensions and cut the work force. Blame the unions and medical coverage. Same move that Delta, US Air and American Airlines did. Only reason they have not outsourced, is due to the freshness of its product. I think big business will not be happy till we are all working for minimum wage and 39 hours a week.

I just cannot understand this, especially after reading the first paragraph in this AP article on Monday: "WASHINGTON (AP) - Americans are feeling confident enough in the economy to go back to a time-honored tradition - taking on a little extra debt."

Another formerly good company that has failed to innovateand keep up with a competitive marketplace. I hope they figure it out. Hostess is an Iconic American Company.
