PRESTON, Wash. – The Washington State Patrol says a suspected drunken driver driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-90 near Preston on Tuesday afternoon crashed head-on into another car, critically injuring both herself and the other driver.

Troopers say at about 12:37 p.m. Tuesday, a Trooper traveling eastbound on I-90 just west of the Preston exit saw an Acura RL in front of him drive up and over a dirt median that separates the eastbound and westbound lanes. The Acura drove all the way down the hill and continued to drive in the middle westbound lane, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. The Acura swerved to the right to avoid colliding with a semi-truck, and in turn collided head-on with a Honda Civic.

The driver of the Acura, Janet Bumgardner, 53, of Newcastle, and the driver of the Honda, Rachel McNaul, 29, of North Bend, were both rushed to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

Bumgardner, who has a prior DUI conviction, will face charges as a result of the collision.

Prior conviction? Should be 1 strike & license revoked for these people.

Should have given her a trip in a real slow moving ambulance. I guess 53 is not old enough to learn even one simple lesson. Stop drinking and driving. She will recover get another car and do it again, not a lick of common sense in some people.

I think that habitual drunk drivers are just as bad as serial killers and should be dealt with accordingly.

These people lose their license and continue to drive. I know one man recently released from prison for DUI and driving with out a license (fifth time) was arrested two days out for,,,,,,,,,,,, you guessed it; DUI, driving without a license and domestic violence. This State has a revolving door for individuals convicted of DUI.

Here we go again! I have written our state legislators urging then to pass legislation that would take the car away from drunk drivers with multiple convictions and CRUSH IT INTO SCRAP METAL BEFORE THEIR VERY EYES ON TV so anyone that might even consider driving while drunk might just think twice and call a cab - perhaps keeping our citizens alive. And if losing their $50,000 car isn't enough, fine them the value of the vehicle so that perhaps they won't have enough cash to just run out and buy another. Write your elected officials in Olympia. I did and was told that there was a tough anti-drinking law introlduced last year and IT WENT NOWHERE!!!! Another is being introduced this year. Write them and tell them to include the crushed car provision!

Since the justice system seems to not be severe enough on drunk drivers, I guess the most we can hope for is that this second time drunk driver will have injuries that will prevent her from ever driving again. My hopes for a complete recovery for the VICTIM.

It's not the justice system, it's the legislation that's not severe enough. I realize that these people have problems and turn to alcohol for comfort, etc. and I pity them, but THEY TAKE INNOCENT LIVES!!! And my pity turns to anger. I am saddened that human beings are so weak. I realize these are loved ones who are suffering with problems they don't know how to handle, but at the same time, they are taking out people who do or can and are loved ones of someone else, as well. Heartbreaking, heartwrenching...nightmare. But, I am sick of it and want to see something done.

Remember folks, alcohol and drugs should be taken in moderation amounts, especially when driving.

The problem as I see it is, you can take away a DWI persons car, license ect. but what makes them unable to get behind the wheel of someone else's car. hrdheeded1 why do you say alcohol and drugs shoud be in moderation when driving. Why not say DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. I wish I had the answer to getting a DWI and continuing to drive. It makes me sick. Prayers for the victims recovery.

Drunk by Noon... What a piece of work. Some people never learn. However, I don't think tougher laws will deter people from drinking and driving, it's a fact that when you are under the influence of alcohol, you don't have the ability to make sound decisions. With our culture, I think the only way to 'fix' the problem is through education. When you get a DUI you have to attend a victims panel where families who lost someone to DUI educate you and share their experiene. This is a very powerful experience that you only experience when you get in trouble. Perhaps if someone experiences a victims panel before they get in trouble, they may make better decisions. I pray that both parties recover.

I think people who don't obey the speed limit are just as bad as these drunk drivers and should also have to pay the penality when you drive to fast, revoke the license after 1 speeding ticket, that will get most of the cars off the road, there we solved the traffice congestion issue!
