HAIFA, Israel — The family of an American activist who was fatally crushed by an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza accused the Israeli military of whitewashing its investigation into the death Wednesday in opening a civil case against Israel.

The parents of Rachel Corrie are seeking unspecified compensation from Israel's Defense Ministry for their daughter's death in 2003.

Corrie, 23, was killed when she tried to block a bulldozer from demolishing a Gaza home The driver said he didn't see her, and the Israeli military has ruled her death an accident - a version her parents reject.

Corrie was an activist with the International Solidarity Movement, a group that sends foreigners into volatile hot spots to assist Palestinians. The activists often place themselves between Israeli forces and Palestinians to try to stop the Israeli military from carrying out operations.

At Wednesday's opening of the civil case, the Corries' lawyer demanded a new investigation into her death.

"The Israeli government is covering this up under the umbrella of combat activity, which absolves soldiers of responsibility, said Husein Abu Husein. He said he would present his case over the next two weeks, but a ruling isn't expected for about a year.

Corrie's story has become a rallying cry for international anti-Israel activists. Based on her diaries and e-mails to her parents, the story was adopted into an off-Broadway play called "My Name Is Rachel Corrie."

A small crowd of supporters gathered outside the court, holding posters of Corrie and calling for justice for her family.

"On March 16, 2003, Rachel was ripped away from our family and it left an enormous void in our life that can never be replaced and I know that many people in this part of the world have similar voids in their lives," her mother, Cindy Corrie, told reporters.

The Corries have previously unsuccessfully tried to sue Caterpillar Inc., the U.S. company that manufactured the bulldozer. They claimed the company was liable for aiding and abetting human rights violations.

Corrie was from Olympia, Wash. Her parents have repeatedly returned to the Palestinian territories, including to the spot where she was killed. One other International Solidarity Movement activist has died from Israeli fire, and at least two others have been seriously wounded.

"The activists often place themselves between Israeli forces and Palestinians to try to stop the Israeli military from carrying out operations". She went to war against Israel and lost. Now the parents sue because their daughter was trying to fight a country all on her own?

It is tragic for a family to lose a child. That said anyone stupid enough to stand in front of a bull dozer is just cleaning up the gene pool. There are ways to protest a cause without putting your life on the line. She maybe had feelings about the situation, but this was none of her business.

While it is easy to condemn Corrie as an idiot for standing in front of a bulldozer, and certainly despicable that her family would sue Caterpiller over the matter, when judging the rightness of the Palestinian cause one should keep in mind the historical basis. Briefly, in 1947 a UN mandate in effect appropriated Palestinian land for use in forming the State of Israel. In other words, Palestinian land was taken away from Palestinians and given to Jews. Against his better judgment, this mandate was reluctantly supported by then President Truman only after considerable Jewish pressure, including a threat to withdraw Jewish support for him in the upcoming Presidential election (a root of the Jewish political action committee known today as AIPAC, considered by the US Congress to be the second most powerful lobby in Washington). The point is, when judging the Palestinians, you might consider how you would react if land belonging to you were forcibly taken away without recompense.

I am truly sorry for death, but on the other hand Corrie made the decision to lay down her life for her cause. Jumping or trying to stop a large bull dozer is truly risky behavior especially in a war zone.

I have ZERO sympathy for a pair of liberal lunatics (or right-wing loons for that matter) who raised a child to be a total moron who laid down in front of a bulldozer in the middle of a war zone. The Corries obviously do not see Fundamentalist Islam as the EVIL that it is. They see it as a political movement that opposes the US and Israel when it's actually a destructive fascist force that wants to subjugate everyone to their warped ideals of justice. Rachel Corrie was no hero; she was aiding and abetting evil and her own stupidity caused her death. I do not find it tragic that a defender of evil is killed. While it's unfortunate that her parents raised her in such a way to cause her judgment to be so impaired by her fringe beliefs, the pain of losing her is something that they have to live with.

She sided with the Dark Side, the evil force unleashed on the planet, the realm of the Islamic Terrorist and was a cheerleader, if your that mixed up in life then you will most likely be crazy enough to jump under a bulldozer. This is why the public should ignore crazy left wing morons.

If she had been shot in a combat zone asking the fighting soldiers to lay down their weapons would the family sue the armies involved? Oh ya they are liberals from Olympia, so most likely.

Exactly what rules of engagement are her parents upset with? Their daughter put herself in harm's way fighting for a cause she believed in. My guess is that she knew the possibilities when she took the actions she did. But do mom and dad want "time-out" or "King's X" or "I'm a girl so you can't hit me?" I can understand their grief, but the world isn't fair and not everyone survives their actions. Their actions are deplorable and demean their daughter's memory and what she stood for.

This is so stupid. She should have stayed home. Why did she lay down in front of a bulldozier??? To see the undercarriage?? They will not win, and they should not win.

I'm sorry that this young lady chose to jump in front of a giant bulldozer. But the fact of the matter is when you do that, you risk injury or death. This certainly isn't Caterpillars fault, nor the Isreali governments fault. She had no business being there. It's time for the Corrie's to stop trying to profit off of this very avoidable tragedy.
