SEATTLE -- While investigating a train accident that killed a woman in Seattle Thursday morning, investigators discovered a small explosive device.
Trains began moving again around 2:00 p.m. around Carkeek Park when the explosive was determined too small to do any damage. FBI, ATF, BNSF and Seattle Police both examined the object and investigated the death.
Around 9:00 a.m., the woman, only identified as being in her 50's, was struck and killed by the train in that area.
Police said the two incidents are not connected. Officers said the object was not large enough to do damage to the tracks, and was even possibly left over from the Fourth of July.
Police said prior to being hit, the woman appeared to be walking away from the tracks, but turned around and knelt down at one point, looking back at the tracks.
Investigators said the engineer sounded the train's whistle and braked, but the woman was still hit.
After officers arrived on scene to piece together the accident, they discovered what appeared to be the pipe bomb.
About 40 trains use that particular track on an average day.
