RENTON, Wash. - Three people were ejected when their van went off the road and down an embankment early Tuesday morning. Two of the victims suffered serious injuries.

The single vehicle accident occurred just before 12:30 a.m. in the 17000 block of Renton-Issaquah Road SE (State Route 900).

According to the Washington State Patrol, the 2003 Ford Econoline van left the roadway and went into a ditch and then struck an embankment..

"I think he just drifted off the roadway and basically rode this whole ditch out here for quite a few feet and then struck that embankment," said Sergeant Chris Clark of the State Patrol.

The driver and two passengers, all male, were thrown from the van.

The Patrol says only the driver, a 23-year-old from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, was wearing a seatbelt at the time. He suffered the least of the injuries and was taken to Valley Medical Center. His two passengers, a 21-year-old, also from Coeur d'Alene, and a 29-year-old from Santa Cruz, California, were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Both were in serious condition.

Troopers believe alcohol is to blame for the crash. At last word, the driver was to be treated and released from the hospital. He will be under police custody.

adriennec I appreciate your words to thunderbird3. One of the men in this accident is my nieces husband. He is laying in the hospital with a severed spinal cord and will never walk again. I am sure he will regret getting into a car with a driver that had too much to drink for the rest of his life. I also understand tbirds reaction. It is frustrating when you see hard working good people make foolish choices. Please pray for these young men.

First, my heart goes out to the families that have been affected by this terrible accident. Next, thunderbird3, this accident has nothing to do with where these men are from. It is against the law to drive under the influence and not wear a seatbelt in Idaho and California. Please remember that family and friends do read these articles. I feel that lol'ing about an accident where lives are on the line is very rude and disrespectful. You should think about what you type before you hit the submit button. These men have mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, children and wives. These families are all hurting very badly right now. They are human and yes all humans make mistakes. Please don't say hurtful things so others can see them. Keep them to yourself.
