OAK HARBOR, Wash. -- A local Native American tribe is steaming after an ancient burial ground was unearthed by construction workers in Oak Harbor.

Three gravesites were accidentally dug up containing human remains that are hundreds, if not thousands, of years old. The Swinomish Tribe says the accident should have never happened - because state archaeologists warned the city in 2009 that remains could be buried at the site along Southeast Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor.

For now, construction work has stopped until the tribe can find out how to properly remove the remains.

"It just created a lot disturbance and spiritual pain," said Larry Campbell, Historical Preservation Officer for the Swinomish Tribe. "It should never have happened."

The City of Oak Harbor is now working with tribe to make things right.

"It was an oversight that we didn't acknowledge the states recommendations," said Eric Johnston, City Engineer. "It was not intentional and not meant to happen. It just fell through the cracks."

The "oversight" could be costly for the City of Oak Harbor now that the project may fall behind schedule. It is also paying for a team of archaeologists and security guards.

Oh no, the Indians are outraged again. I'd be willing to bet a couple cases of Jim Beam to the Swinomish Tribal Councel would make it all better! As a white man, I am sick of people like STRAYDOG1977 acting as though I or he for that matter had anything to do with injustices done to the Indians. Weaker peoples have been getting conquered by more advanced peoples since the beginning of time. Get over it! Any non Indians that don't agree with me, should do the right thing and give your "stolen" property back to the tribes right away....how do you sleep at night? What a joke!

YET ANOTHER DESECRATION OF OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS ! AS IF KILLING OFF 9 MILLION NATIVES WERE NOT INJURY ENOUGH , LETS FIND THE BURIAL GROUNDS AND DESECRATE THE REMAINS OF ANCIENT NATIVES AS WELL BECAUSE HEY PROFIT IS GOD AND THE RESTING PLACE OF ANCIENT PEOPLE , INDIANS AT THAT, DO NOT MATTER WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING PROFIT!

It's a sign of the times, EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING, "falls through the cracks" today. It's due to a toxic social combination of constant distractions, attention deficit, poor education, poor communication skills, inept and unqualified leadership and management and lack of caring about anything.

They're correct...this should have never happened. I hope they really do all they can to make this situation better; it'll never be "right".

The tribe should not have buried their people under a city street.

Things just don't "fall through the cracks." Irresponsible people tasked with the responsibility of keeping track of things don't bother to do their jobs. That simple.
