KING COUNTY, Wash. - Sheriff's deputies are investigating an officer involved shooting in the South Hill community of Puyallup. The incident took place at about 4 a.m.

According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, deputies were trying to stop a reported stolen pickup truck near the intersection of 116th St. East and 120th Avenue East, in unincorporated Pierce County.

According to deputies, the suspect drove down a dead-end street and then struck a tree stump.

"The deputies got into what we call a felony stop position. That's where they're using their car doors for cover, ordering the driver out at gunpoint," said Pierce County Sheriff's Detective Jerry Bates. "The driver did not follow their commands, put the vehicle into reverse and struck the deputies' patrol car. (It) knocked the passenger-side deputy down."

According to Bates, the driver-side deputy fired one shot at the suspect .  Bates says the suspect was hit., but managed to jump from the truck and tried to flee.

A canine unit, also on the scene, sent the police dog to subdue the suspect. Video from the scene showed the suspect being treated by medical personnel.

The suspect, said to be about 22-years-old, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries caused by the gunshot and by the police dog.

My guess is that is wasn't this "suspected" car thief's first dealings with the law, and it probably won't be his last.

You know, we used to hang horse thieves. Maybe if we hung car thieves these scum of the earth humans would not be so quick to steal others property. I work hard for my stuff, if you want to steal it, be prepared to die.

Right on tomma206! Reckless endangerment of citizens for the adrenaline rush of a high speed chase and then follow it by a firing squad where they get extra paid vacation days as a reward for gunning down a "civilian." We don't need them. We don't want them. And millions of good men would be a lot better off without them.

I'm so disappointed in the police officers or sheriff's deputies. Who were they any way? I think they need to take some pistol lesson from Steven Seagal. Shoot to kill, guys. Shoot to kill. Then, you'll do all the tax payers a big favor.

If this criminal doesnt have insurance or the money to pay for his own medical care, he should really have to treat himself. Maybe he'll think twice before committing a crime next time. (Assuming he makes it....hopefully not.) Randomly, about twice a decade, we should just gas all the prisons/jails and start fresh. That would keep the fear of God into the habitual criminals. Stay out....cause you never know when the gasman's comin! If we lose a few of the good criminals, I can live with that.

@yessir... At first I was thinking they shot him for stealing a car, until I read he rammed the officers car. Then it's fair game for the officers. It's nice they didn't shoot to kill though. Maybe this guy at only 22 years of age will wise up some. I know some find it hard to believe but there are a lot of people that actually still learn from their mistakes.

Well, they could have shot this person when the back up lights came on, but waited for clairification of their intentions. Could have been worse, the officer could have killed him and be on administrative leave indeffinately, and not protecting us law abiding citizens.

I always find it comforting when I read the comments and the normal idiot commenters like bobknows, and tomma206 are put in their place. It's nice that there are people out there that use their brains, unlike those morons. As far as this story goes - I don't agree with officers chasing criminals in run away cars - it's dangerous for the public and dangerous to the officers - who are ALREADY risking their life daily to protect the public...However, I'm happy they caught this guy - and no officers were hurt.

tomma206, hold on, keep waiting, i gotta finish laughing at your idiotic post! LOL.. ROTFLMAO... First, he went down a dead end and hit a tree stump.. car still driveable.. hardly a high speed chase. Guess what? Cars are considered a deadly weapon. How do you propose they stop him, genius? You just say they should have a better way but what is YOUR solution? You have none. Just a lot of whining. And guess what? Most DO give up when they have guns drawn on them. Look up your stats. Yeah, like teachers become teachers so they can ge summer vacation, cops become cops so they can kill someone to get "Paid leave pending investigation" right?

Tomma, if you expect the police to get out of the way and not apprehend the crook and chases are dangerous the only thing left is to let the crooks run rampant. It sure would be nice to be a criminal though. The police cannot do anything to you even after they catch you because it would be unfair to the crooks chance of escaping.

Bobknows...............just maybe if they knew the penalty was serious they would quit doing it. They blow off car theft like it is stealing a candy bar. You just must make these comments just for attention. Then again, it could be you are one of those car stealing, cop hating, candy bar stealing people. I have to laugh because if someone ripped you off you would be the first one on the phone dialing 911 and whining for help. There now you got your 5 minutes of fame.

The cops use the criminals trying to escape as an excuse to kill so they get put on a vacation. If the cops were smart they would just get out of the way and follow. They should not just expect that everyone is just going to freeze and give up. Police car chases are a good example, dangerous speeds and pit moves endanger the public. They should come with a better way to stop cars.Shooting the driver wont work making his foot heavier. COPS ARE THE BIGGEST GANG OF KILLERS OUT THERE. Im waiting.....

I take it back! The sheriff should've shot and KILLED him! Now, we have to pay for his hospital expenses, keeping him in jail, and the court costs. From now on, SHOOT TO KILL, guys.

About 12 years ago in our nice city of Puyallup, someone tried to steal my neighbors car at about 2am. He happened to be up on his ham radio and heard the thief and called out "what are you doing", granted a stupid move on his part. The thief then put a 9mm in the window he was at and one in the back of the car as he ran. You never know if it is going to be stolen for a joy ride or a felony crime that would end up in murder. My 2 cents.

And the best part is if you ask the crook he will say borrowed the truck from a friend the name of who he does not know. He is also turning his life around and is normally one of the best young men you would ever want to know. Now he will be sitting in a cell complaining to everyone who will listen that the police are evil and will get what is coming to them for being so mean to him.

The only thing that sucks about this is that the wounds are not life-threatening... Too many criminals are not doing us the favor of dying from the wounds caused by their stupidity... I imagine we'll be seeing a lawsuit and a parade of family members telling us what a "great kid" this guy is...

Let's see.... while in the process of committing a crime... he rams his vehicle into the patrol car throwing one of the officers to the ground and potentially endangers the police officers' lives... and bobknows states it's a police firing squad? What is it with the cop haters on these blogs?

No judge. No jury. No trial. Just line up a firing squad in blue shirts. The penalty for theft is getting a lot worse lately.
