PUYALLUP, Wash. - The Pierce County prosecutor has charged an 18-year-old Puyallup man with aggravated murder in the slaying of a 16-year-old girl with developmental disabilities.

Prosecutor Mark Lindquist says Tyler Wolfgang Savage strangled and raped Kimberly "Kimmie" Daily on Aug. 17 and then dumped her body in a thicket of blackberry bushes.

Court documents say Savage told detectives he had known Daily for more than two years.

In court Tuesday, Savage's attorney entered a not guilty plea on his client's behalf and Savage was ordered held without bail.

Lindquist has not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.

Lindquist said Savage confessed to strangling Daily to death in the course of raping her.

According to court documents, Savage said he convinced Daily to cross the street, which she didn't want to do, prior to leading her to an isolated area. He admitted that he strangled the girl when she tried to leave.

Lindquist said she had been killed before her father reported her missing.

Detectives said Savage told them he was home playing video games after the murder around 4 p.m. last Tuesday.

Daily’s father reported her missing at 5 that afternoon.

Body found Monday

The body of Kimberly Daily was found Monday evening in a vacant lot on 122nd Street East, in the South Hill area of Puyallup - 12 blocks from her home.

The developmentally disabled girl had been missing since last Tuesday when she left her home on a bike to go to a friend's house.

The teen, known for her love for animals, was seen often riding her bike through the neighborhood. The family says she functioned at the level of a 9-year-old due to a disability.

Detectives had questioned the 18-year-old in custody and red flags went up when he had holes in his story.

"They felt that he would eventually lead them to the body. He was cooperative. They could see that he was dealing with this himself as a suspect in this and finally decided to come clean," said Sgt. Mike Blair.

Investigators are searching for evidence on the property where the girl's body was found. They have found her bike, her backpack and half of her cell phone.

Community reacts

“He’s a good kid,” said one of Savage’s neighbors, Jenny Berto.

“My kids adore him.” said Berto, “He’s a happy-go-lucky, loving, trustworthy, friendly kid.”

Savage was enrolled at Emerald Ridge High School in Pierce County. He was scheduled to begin his senior year next month.

Neighbors of Cecil Daily, Kimberly’s father, said he was too upset Tuesday to speak publicly about his daughter’s death.

“My heart is heavy for them, their hearts have to just be broken,” said neighbor Cindy Sexton.

“It’s really hard to know how it’s going to affect the whole community without her,” said Marshelle Rodin, one of Daily's neighbors.

Let's see, it says she was killed within an hour, so, what's the point of 6 hours? Why not 4 or 2 or 12 or 9 . . . . No matter what time frame we set, there will always be an exception to the rule and someone will want the rules changed because of that. It is very sad to read stories about abducted people. I think about my daughter every day she's alive, as I do not live near her. I am sure I would be devastated if she were missing for a couple hours. A line unfortunately needs to be drawn, and it has been. The harder fact to deal with here to me, is the fact that this so-called human is going to be housed for the rest of his life on tax payer funds. This animal needs to receive the ultimate penalty, no question about it. Seriously, he's at a home an hour later playing computer games . . . . . D & D okay : ( Until our society sets an example for others to see what can become of them, this unforgivable behavior will continue and will likely increase.

@ Jakedog: Yeah. But we can't always blame that. Scaping it that seems to me. I think it was all human nature that took over this kid. He liked her, she didn't want him, in turn he does this. He knew he was powerful over her due to her mental disability. R.I.P Kimmie.

One of Savage's neighbors described him as "a good kid"???? Gimme a break, he rapes and kills a developmentally disabled girl who functions as a 9 year old and his neighbor calls him a "good kid". Then he goes further and describes him as "loving, trustworthy, and a friendly" kid. Is this neighbor Crazy???? If he considers the suspect a "loving, trustworthy, friendly, good kidi." I'd like to know what he considers a bad guy.

The best thing this creep could do for himself, our whole neighborhood, his own and Kimmie's family is to just plead guilty and ask for a quick death penalty. If he goes to prison, he'll wish for death every day for the rest of his pathetic sorry @$$ life. Prisoners are going to LOVE his smirking young self with his girlie long hair. He's going to get what he inflicted every day or get beaten until he has no teeth to bite back and just have to take it, which ever way it comes. I hope he lives a long life in prison and makes LOTS of "new friends". My heart goes out to Kimmie's family and the people in my neighborhood who knew her. RIP Kimmie

Oh Lord, here we go again. Some arm-chair quarterback putting blame on the parents. I, for one, am sick of those posters who do that. This girl was 16-years-old and, yes, she had the mental acuity of a 9-year-old but that does not mean that she can be kept under lock and key. This girl had a life and I am sure that riding her bike to her friend's place was a fairly common occurence. The last thing on the minds of her poor folks were that she would run into trouble. Rather than try to put the onus on them we should all be giving them prayers and moral support in this horrible time for them R.I.P. KIMMIE. God, please comfort Kimmie's family and friends.

While we all can assume he was a complete Tweaker his entire life and rightfully so following his cruel actions ~ But a person can act as a completely normal individual fo a number of years and one day SNAP and do something such as this that can create a complete opposite of what he was ever protrayed to be. With that said I am not condoning his actions I believe the Injection should be administered to him and POOF he should be No More But I am not in Charge or there would be a lot less people in the world! I hate Theives, Killers, Rapists, Child abusers/Molesters etc.....But people change and they don't always come off being who they are hence the reason peolpe trust them so much and become the victim. So it is easy to judge those that have known this Scum Bag but that truly makes us judgemental & Ignorant. **GodSpeed in the healing for the Family and friends for All involved.. Losing Someone you love is the toughest challenge in life. RIPKimmie (lost my son April 2009)

Jenny Berto needs to have her head examined. I realize many people didn't see this coming but if "her kids adore him" as she says, if he was left alone with them for any period of time, I would have them taken to a doctor. Maybe Kimmie was not his first victim. If her idea of a loving and trustworthy person is someone who rapes & murders at a moment's notice, she should be in jail with him :)

We all are held accountable for our actions. I have 5 children and 8 grandchildren, and if anything were to happen to them I would be devastated. My heart goes out to Tyler's mother TOO! Us who are parents and love our children have empathy for Kimmey's family and Tyler's family!

I think the kid needs to be studied first, lobotomized if necessary, to find out what caused this. I know there are many more time bombs like him out there. There seems to be a pattern. Neglect by parents, tough times at school, and lots of time spent playing violent video games. How many times have we seen this?

Violent people have the capacity to put on an excellent front and he fooled many people. He deserves the most severe punishment allowed. What about Savage's parents? He's only 18 to have committed such a horrible crime - let's look at his parents. This is horrendous and my heart goes out to Mr. Daily. His daughter deserved much better from its community.

It's true, press attention could not have helped find her. She was gone before she was reported missing. But that is not always going to be the case. Sometimes, frequent and immediate press can help find the missing. Cases such as this need to be attacked by the press immediately so that the faces of the missing are fresh in the minds of the public. It seems it is only newsworthy when there is a tragic, dramatic ending. My condolences. Kimmie was a sweetie and will be missed by the Special Olympics community. Her family is in my thoughts.

Washingtonian, I am an adult who is very interested in hearing details from other kids (or adults) who know this guy, so we can have some idea of whether there were any indications that he might do something like this, and so we can perhaps come to understand something that in the end is probably incomprehensible. But people always try to understand why something horrible happens, and hearing the backgrounds of the people involved sometimes helps with that. My prayers go out to Kimmie's family.

Sorry if this is the first thing you ever have the experience upon to which have an opinion. Leave the law to the adults. This kid will eventually be charged with 2nd murder in my opinion for what is obviously a crime if passion and opportunity. DA always, and I mean always charges any murderer with murder in the 1st initially to have something to plea bargain with.

My son goes to school with this kid and said he was a "sorta popular nerdy kid" and its reported that he never got into any trouble before. Its very sad for both families involved in this. While there is no excuse for his actions and he deserves the maximum punishment for his crimes, he probably just paniced, which is why MOST murders happen.. people think criminals sit around and make elaborate plans to hurt and kill but actually that is not as common as just doing something stupid that totally got out of control. I am in NO WAY defending this kid but the hyperbole that always accompanies these kinds of crimes is just out of hand. We can all speculate whether it was the internet or video games that made him do it (the '90's and Milennia scapegoat) or maybe it was because of satanic rock music (the '80's scapegoat) or marijuana (the '70's scapegoat).. we can go on and on.. or MAYBE it was just a stupid kid that didn't think through his actions and F'd up big time.

You're so right @charlee2010, murder, rape and scumbags are an invention of the internet and never existed before the advent of technology. Wow, what it must be like to be a thought in your obviously small mind. Probably a tight fit.

How Sad! Someone so out of control allowed to be on the streets to take someone else's life.. this Person didn't belong in Society if he had issues that extreme. Godspeed to the girls Family and Friends. and may god have mercy on this beast.

I think you're right about the electronic world. Tyler probably spent the better part of his life behind a video screen playing games. Only now, there is no reset button. What I want to know are past crimes, the cops nabbed him up right away so he was well known. This kid has a past.

Isnt it ironic how many of you slay this guy for what he did to this poor girl rather than wonder what casued his actions. People dont just want to rape and pillage something casues it. I think that allthis texting and social sites are the doom of society. with the social networking site and texting there is no more face to face contact and people dont know how to react when they dont get an answer they dont like so they go into a rage and hurt people. My Heart goes out for this girls family but what is being done so this doesnt happen to another family. Society is letting the electronic world destroy us.

I went to school with Tyler Savage. He is a weird kid, I always thought he'd get in trouble for doing something like this. I am praying for the family of the young girl. Tyler deserves EVERYthing that is coming to him.

Tyler Wolfegang Savage, that is the only person who has been booked in the past 24 hours for murder 1.

It wont be hard to find his name, look on the Pierce county jail records site for people booked in the last 24 hours. Give the kid the electric chair, his sudden guilt is no excuse for what he did.

Oviously the cops knew right where to go. What was this kid's record? Should he have remained incarcerated? Who sprung him? Someone in the upper ranks of our judicial system needs to be called out on this one. How many more innocent children need to die to make a point?
