SEATTLE -- The parents of Susan Cox Powell, the Puyallup native who disappeared from her Utah home one year ago Monday, are appalled by accusations Powell abandoned her family to run off with another man.

Powell disappeared from Utah one year ago Monday.  Her husband, Josh Powell, who remains a person of interest in the case, told police he took their two children camping during a snow storm and when he returned, his wife was gone.

Josh Powell and his father, Steve, are now saying Susan might have left on purpose.  Steve Powell told NBC's TODAY Show that Susan knew Josh might take the kids camping on an inclement night because he had done so before.

"She was very much aware he would do it again, and when he did, it was probably the perfect time to make the slip," Steve Powell said.

Even though the one-year anniversary is painful for her parents, Chuck and Judy Cox spoke publicly Monday morning because their focus is on finding their daughter.  They strongly disagree with the claims made by Josh and Steve Powell.

"They're making all these outlandish statements," Chuck Cox said.  "It's just ridiculous."

Josh Powell and his father are claiming that Susan Powell might have disappeared with another missing man: Steven Koecher.  He is also from Utah and disappeared six days after Susan Powell.  The Powells say both Susan and Steven are about the same age, both were members of the LDS church, and both were in West Valley City the week they disappeared in December 2009.

On a website run by the Powells, Josh's father claims Susan may have run off to Brazil with Koecher to start a new life. Also on the website, allegations are made against Susan's parents saying they were attempting to destroy Susan and Josh's marriage. It also states Susan lived a secret double life where she struggled with emotional and anger management issues.

“Now, they’re trying to say bad things about my daughter and make her less than she was - a devoted mother who loves her children and a wife trying to make her marriage work,” said Chuck Cox.

"I think they keep coming up with new stories. It appalls me that they're making all these new accusations and there's no truth to them," said Judy Cox, Susan's mother.

Susan's parents say her two sons were her life and she would never leave them.  They think Josh Powell, who police have called a person of interest in the case in the past, is trying to get the focus off him.

"Now he's accusing her of running off with someone,"Judy Cox said.   "Nothing is farther from the truth."

Josh Powell's own sister calls the claims her brother and father are making about Susan running away ridiculous.

On the one year anniversary of Susan's disappearance, my thoughts and prayers are with her children and parents and family and friends. What an agonizing thing to have to go through. I pray they will get the answers they so desperately need and soon!

Id say that JOSH can say that the misisng man and his missing wife were all driving to Vegas to meet Elvis and Jimmy Hoffa for dinner and a night on the town. I questions why JOSH would take his kids out camping in the winter? The camping trip might have been when a smoke screen for other things. Camping in winter, Id rather be inside keeping myself AND my dog warm. The missing man story, was he a friend of his missing wife, or did JOSH read about his case in the news and came up with the idea that they were together. Lets see, Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped years ago, she also lived in Utah, maybe her kidnapper's story came to JOSH in a brainwave moment that woke him up in the middle of night. I expect more dribble from JOSH and his daddy, maybe his daddy will wipe JOSH'S chin TO CLEAR THE DRIBBLE.

Yes, and Scott Peterson went camping the night Laci disappeared, didn't he? Oh... no, that was a fishing expedition. I think statistics stack up against the husband.

A woman would never abandon or drown her kids for a man.... the name Susan brings another case to mind.

Classictruth - very interesting. Do you know if anyone has tried to contact people in Brazil and/or reported this to the authorities there? Is there an LDS church down there?

Who cares. There is a point when you walk away and agree to disagree. one family should stay quite, the other should move on.

5. I just want to add, I am not in Josh Powell's corner; nor am I prejudice against LDS. JP's behavior has been....disturbing to say the least and I don't care for the public bashing of the family(ies). Would church members help these two? Possibly.....I'll leave that up to you. But, if you dig into these two cases....objectively....there are many signs and coincidences....not to mention "bizarreness" and it not just JP's actions or nonaction. Just want to find the truth....and as shoreline stated....an investigation to put this speculaton to rest. Saying it is nonsense...riduculous....a diversion...is wrong. It needs to be gleaned out as in any other theory to get on with the investigation and finding these two. If they find them both alive and well....leave them be. But do a little research and see for yourself. A non-confirmed and conflicting timeline does not make it fact.....at all. Too many people "not talking" and things being "hush". JMO

4. Two people originally from the Salt Lake City area go missing within a week's time. One male 30, one female 28. Both committed faithfully to their LDS church and beliefs. Both described as devout. One unhappily married and the other unhappily single. Both enjoy the outdoors and music. She want to learn Portuguese and he was a missionary in Brazil. Note: A missionary from Portugal returned to the same St. George singles ward a few days after they both disappeared???) All inquiries into either disappearance is referred to LE in West Valley City or St. George, UT. How convenient....where their churches were located. SK's disappearance took place in Henderson, NV and was covered by them and the LV LE...briefly...why contact SG LE??? Most LE comme;nts stopped immediately in both cases after Feb. More....

3 With SK saying he would not be there Wed night, the members had no reason to contact him prior to his car being found Thurs morning in the subdivsion in LV. How convenient no one called him or could vouch for his whereabouts for three whole days. Accordingly, there were the last persons he "talked" to. It was originally stated he had his passport with him...then in Feburary, it was discovered in a drawer....a newly renewed passport also. He rented a room, not much belongings to go thru....but it wasn't found for two months. And what was a man who could not pay his rent for 3 months doing traveling all over the place, buying gas and just where was he taking a trip to with the renewed passport and how was he to finance it? more.......

2. According to five mysterious "witnesses" Steven attended the temple the night of Dec 9 in St. George, UT..doesn't match with the mother's timeline which placed him in N. NV and N UT at that time. Very strange calls from the church members to Steven in Las Vegas...one member asking for him to fill in for him because he was in LV too.....yet neither knew the other was there...nor did they bother to ask why? The one who wanted SK to fill in had stated to nevermind, he was on his way back to St. George at the time....he never showed up for the PEC meeting. Other members also called SK that morning with strange questions of would he be there the following Wed for the basketball game, and would he be making an annoucement in meeting that day about the game??? Then another call was made questioning who was going to be there that morning? Bizarre. Three calls that morning to him and then he disappears at noon. more...

@ shoreline said on December 6, 2010 at 9:27 AM Your correct. I have been following both cases and too feel there is a connection. If you dig deeper....it get's deeper...much. I don't know these families and only want to get to the truth in both of their cases. Koecher left a party abruptly on the evening of the 7th and his behavior was erratic till his disappearance on the 13th. (Susan's disappearance was discovered the morning of the 7th) It included a strange trip to the SLC area and northern NV. His parents and family who are from the SLC area were never aware of this trip. The timeline being used in the Koecher case is in direct conflict with the timeline stated by the mother in a press conference. FACT! Most of the information gathered for substantiation for it is based on hearsay of she said, he said and has never been confirmed by LE or mentioned in the media. more....

The best lie is the closest one to the truth. Susan and Steven may truly be together, sharing the same piece of dirt in the Utah desert after being caught together. I hope I am wrong, but I would give it a 90% probability. Can't convict on probability, only beyond a reasonable doubt.

yeah cause obviously running off to a country that requires a $250 visa and a special process to even get it, makes the clearest choice for where this woman ran off to. Just saying it seems to me that womans body is somewhere in the woods.

mr magoo - If Susan Powell ran off to Brazil with another man, there certainly should be a way to track this. Do people need a passport to enter Brazil? If so, did Susan have a passport? What about this other guy, did he have a passport? Would the Brazilian government be able to help locate these two? I just wish the parents and children of Susan can finally find out what REALLY happened to her - they will remain in my prayers!!

shoreline, I pray that susan IS still alive, however, it does not seem that she is the kind of person who would just abandon her children. What agony this must be for her parents, to keep hanging on , not knowing what really happened. What puzzles me is why is Josh not allowing family to be involved in the kids' lives? Everything about this is so bizarre! My love and prayers continue to be with the kids and INNOCENT family members!!

Justhonest, I agree with you. Taking your young boys out for a FEW hours of camping in the middle of the night in freezing temps? About the most ridiculous excuse for not being around when your wife disappears ever uttered.

Still, the coincidence of the other missing man is interesting. Both the same age, both from the same church, both went missing at the same time, from the same town... There's enough there to warrant at least an investigation. I'm not saying Josh is innocent or guilty, but how many of you are going to publicly apologize as quickly as you proclaim Josh's guilt IF Susan does turn up somewhere?

I really thought that once Josh got their kids settled and adjusted to living in a new home with new caregivers, that he would turn himself in.

I would totally believe Josh. Every father takes his kids camping late at night this time of year (if I remember correctly).

Josh must really be grasping now to deflect interest on himself. Take that as a sign that investigators must be closing in.
