GOLD BAR, Wash. – A Sultan man died early Saturday morning after he was tased by Snohomish County Sheriff's deputies.

Neighbors who called 911 reported that 25-year-old Adam Colliers was running up and down the street yelling and causing problems in the middle of the night. Two Snohomish County Sheriff's Deputies responded and say Colliers immediately charged them and fought them to the ground.

The sheriff's office says a stun gun was used on Colliers. He stopped breathing. Deputies began CPR, but it was too late.

Family said on the weekends, Colliers stayed at a house where he was a caretaker for a paraplegic family friend.

"He was like family," said Sharon Williams. Colliers stayed with Williams and her paraplegic brother. "I can't believe this happened."

Williams described Colliers as small and about 120 pounds.

"If two deputies can't get control of a kid that sized, there is something wrong," she said. "This isn't right."

Colliers' sister said her brother was a gentle man who was well loved. She says she doesn't understand why her brother would be running up and down the street yelling.

"This doesn't sound like him. My brother is a quiet person," said Heidi Colliers. "Now I don't have a brother anymore."

Sgt. Robert Goetz with Everett Police and the Snohomish Multiple Agency Response team investigating the incident says the taser is a standard tool to subdue an unruly person and it's considered the lowest level of force available.

"In this particular case they were charged by this individual and they were the ones who were being attacked, if you will," he said.

The incident is the sixth violent encounter for police in as many days.

Late Friday night, Seattle police wounded an armed man in West Seattle, while Tacoma police fatally shot a man with a knife earlier in the day. Deaths also occurred Tuesday in Federal Way and in Spanaway, south of Tacoma, and on Monday in Seattle.

@rodblackey... Sorry for your loss, but, I know someone who lives on the street where this happened. They said they were woken up at about 1:30 in the morning to the sounds of screaming (almost unhuman). They said it sounded like someone was getting beaten mercilessly. They also said that when Sharon was told what was going on, her quote was "Oh, he's (Adam) probably on LSD again. So...he was not walking up and down the street. It only got quiet after the cops showed up. If he was on drugs - he most certainly would have charged the police... The police need to look at what's been going on in that house. Other people on the street are afraid to confront it, but the authorities need to look deeper...

My prayers go out to his family and anyone who knew Adam. I knew Adam, but I did not know him well..I wish I did. And as I read through these comments...it breaks my heart to see so much hatred towards him or the officers involved. People loved and cared for this young man and even if he didnt make the best choices in life, there is no room for anyone to judge him, nor do i blame the officers involved for his death. There is no reason for hatred or blame in this tragic accident.

Based on those who knew him, it sounds like either something very unusual happened to him or something went horribly wrong when they subdued him. We do not know if anyone is at fault. I'm talking to those here who are spewing hatred of a young man they have never met. Hopefully you don't refer to yourselves as "Christians." What if it was one of your teenage kids getting drunk at a party for the first time? Try to have some compassion. Many years ago, I was on the wrong side of an altercation with a cop who seemed completely bonkers. I was maybe 25 years old, 5'2, 100 lbs, girl. Facing five cops with their guns pointed at my chest as they asked me to get out of my vehicle and walk towards them. I had not even been speeding--the first cop had made some kind of bizarre mistake and I think he was escalating it to cover his embarrassment. Even a cop at City Hall heard my story and laughed--"Sounds like a rookie," he said. I was VERY scared of police for many years after.

His actions show what kind of guy he was. He attacked officers just like Maurice clemmons did. He could easily have gotten their gun and killed them. They used more restraint than necessary.

The police cannot be held responsible if the Taser victim was under the influence of cocaine or other drugs. He started the problems that drew citizen complaints. Poor fellow should not have drew attention to himself in unruly ways if he he had heart problems.

I can't believe the ignorance that I am reading. So many people sitting in their homes on their computers reading an article about a man they know absolutely NOTHING about and passing judgement on him. “Who are you to judge the life I live? I know I'm not perfect and I don't live to be. But, before you start pointing fingers, make sure your hands are clean.” Adam was a very kind and good person, NOT the kind of person to sit and slander a complete strangers name all over the internet. All of you who have shared your negativity and hateful messages all over this article should be ashamed of your complete lack of compassion for a very sad and heartbreaking situation. Adam has a family. A mother who does not care what you think, only how she feels right now and Im appalled that you can't keep your uneducated opinions to yourself out of RESPECT for a woman who his mourning the untimely death of her baby. Adam you are missed by everyone who was LUCKY enough to have known you.

I live in this town, Adam is 5'4 120lbs, do you really think that 2 6'0 200lbs trained officers had enough reason to use a stun gun? It shows the complete lack of courage, and laziness in those inexperienced DEPUTIES. They are trained officers, they should know what they are doing. Calling a stun gun the "least fatal take down method," is BS as well. The least fatal, tho your may in chance take a punch to the face, is to man up and physically subdue him. Think about it. 2 large trained officers can't handle 1 5'4 small guy. You officers took the easy way out of what ever the situation was at the time....It cost my friend his life, and this community has lost a great person because you couldn't handle the requirements of your job to put yourself at risk. As a trained officers you know the potential risks of using a stun gun. I hope you feel an immense guilt long into the night. md.roblackey@gmail.com RIP ADAM

I was a close personal friend of Adam. He was not a violent guy, he wasn't into drugs and was a quite, polite, nice guy. We would frequently have a beer or two down at the local bar and play poker, he loved life. He probably was cruising on his bike up and down that road, not running...the way the media twists details is BS. We spent many night recording and making music together, chilling and just talking about music, life and crazy off the wall theories about this and that. He was an intelligent guy, an incredibly talented guitarist and songwriter, who would spent hours on end modifying and making custom guitars.... This isn't the type of person who would "charge," the police...nor would be running up and down the road yelling... Adam wasn't an "unruly," guy. He was smart and in control. I wouldn't be surprised after the toxicology report is released showing only maybe alcohol, the medical examiner finds the stun gun hit him in the back. Love and miss you adam... rip

@pennie -- The government simply doesn't have the privilege to legislate what you can, or can't, put in, or take out, of your OWN body if you do in fact OWN your OWN body. So it sounds like aligning our laws with the Constitution would immediately remove one of the two most dangerous situtions that LEO's face.

The two most dangerous situations LEO's face are domestic violence and drug abuse. An instant assessment must favor protecting the safety of the officers and the public, officers and folks in the neighborhood have families too. There is no way to tell in that split second if there are unseen weapons involved, to decide if a stray bullet fired at officers may hit a child asleep in his bed. It's a cruel reality, and I thank God for our law enforcement officers who lay their lives on the line for all of us every day, and I ask God to protect and bless them and their families. I have been in law enforcement, have been the one to disarm a distraught U of O professor who had a gun, in his office; I have a family and so did he, so did the students who were at risk. I am truly sorry for your loss of this precious young man, it is a loss to all of us! love-- "Pastor Mom" PCP or Angel Dust, for instance, renders the substance abuser (duster) very strong and hyper.

Seems lke we could all use a little more "truth" before making paranoid comments here. How about we start requiring all police officers to start wearing those pocket video camera's on EVERY contact with the public. Then the truth about these circumstances will be easier to verify. Most of these incident involve multiple officers so there would be several "points of view" to review. This would protect both the people from abusive officers and officers from paranoid accusations by the public at large. Makes sense, no? We see what the officer sees... then we can "monday mrning quarterback".

Killer cops killing people to protect themselves is the opposite of their excuse for existence in our communities. They promise to be protecting the people, but they are protecting themselves by killing the people. That is not what they are allowed to exist. We do not need to pay taxes to hire a gang of gun thugs to kill us for their own protection. ... There is something VERY WRONG with those who say that killing the people to protect the gun thugs is "justified." We are not so dumb that we cannot see what they are doing. If they cannot or will not protect the people instead of killing the people then we do not want them in our communities.

Tasers are torture devices. They have no place in a decent society..... The blue gun thugs are supposed to be PROTECTING the people, not killing the people. Killing the people is NOT the same as protecting the people. If they are unable or unwilling to protect ALL the people, then they should turn in their badges. .. How many dead men will it take before the sheep wake up and see what these violent gangs are really doing, killing, robing, assaulting, beating, destroying the people? Are you still sheep enough to believe their lies? How many dead murdered men will it take to wake you up?

The police officers are justified. They MUST protect themselves and the community and they are doing just that. So, if someone screams "FIRE" in the theatre, security should question him/her with a low voice and not hurt that person. NO, use all force necessary to stop the crazy person. Also, if someone says I have a bomb at the airport or at the train station, what treat them with kids' gloves...of course NOT. A crazy person can do CRAZY things. I am sorry for the family but they bear the biggest responsibly for the lack of protection for a sick person and if that person is on drugs then all bets are off. Thank you police officers for keeping me and my family safe.

I'm sorry but the police don't go out and look for someone to kill every night. They have a few seconds to make a decision. If people wouldn't be aggressive toward the police they wouldn't get hurt. Taser's usually dont kill people that's why they are used. This guy had to have something else going on physiologically.

How is it that every time someone has an encounter like this with the police we hear that they were great guys? I doubt anyone in the neighborhood thought Colliers' was such a great guy Saturday morning when they called the police. Though the outcome is tragic it's Colliers' actions that put him in the situation that caused his unfortunate death. The police did exactely what they were supposed to do. Besides, all cops are tased themselves as part of their training.

I would like to add that I find it very unlikely that Adam was high and being rowdy, this would be totally unlike him. Perhaps the people in the area that were being loud left shortly before the police arrived? This would be a likely scenario. He may have approached them to give them information and the police instantly became aggressive. This would confuse a peaceful person because it would not register that they could possible be aiming their aggression at him. Adam was truly a gentleman and will be missed.

Why doesn't any news service in the Seattle area publish the full results of all police shooting investigations? Why do we already know that the man tazered to death a few days ago had an autopsy and nothing unusual was found, but in the case of the Federal Way shooting, in which police said that a man in a truck (which was stuck in a ditch) tried to back over a officer, and the officer shot him. Keep in mind that for the officers statement to be true, the bullet or bullets had to enter from the rear of the vehicle. He has been dead for many days, but they will not even release how many times he was shot, or where the bullets entered his body. Some people claim to know that he was shot in the side of the head at point blank range. I would like to know. And I would like to know where the report is of the suicidal man shot by Federal Way police about 2 months, ago. They still have not released one word about that shooting, not one word. Why?

If this case doesn't make it obvious to people that the cops are not interested in putting people in handcuffs, noting will. 2 tough guy cops can not take a 120lbs man to the ground and place him in cuffs? They simply like to shoot people with guns or stun guns. Seriously, have the cops lost their collective minds? I do think that the Tacoma shooting was probably the most justified shooting but why are they trained in hand to hand combat and use of billy clubs and mace if they are not going to use these options? One thing left out of this story, is that the cops own training tells them they are to avoid use a stun gun on someone suspected of being high on drugs, because their heart rates are already elevated, and using a stun gun will put them in cardiac arrest. I think the age of these cops as something to do with this case. Officers are 26 and 29. Cops who killed Native American in Seattle is 27 Hot head Rookies who crack under pressure and get scared easily.

I appreciate being able to speak my mind and for the most part I can respect the people who take the time to share their thinking. I do get disturbed when people get really nasty about the police and in other cases mock the passing of a young persons life or that of someone who has mental illness. I have shared before when blogging about these kind of incident is that we have a huge and growing need for a mental health care system in ths country. Pay now or pay a lot more later !

Are the fellow officers with conscience so insecure in their dept's social environment that they can't say it how it is? Boundary conditions, folks; set them. Response to a wielded knife should be by taser, response to a threatening unarmed man should be by baton, response to another gun should be by gun. Change the rules. Fairly punish anyone who breaks them. Responding to a suicide call? Use a different set of criteria than above. There is no point in preventing a suicide with murder. If we don't make these simple changes, the solution-less downward spiral that we face ahead will lead us into a citizen-police dynamic that won't reverse. Media, you're losing public trust. Police, you're losing trust and public order. People, you're losing your ability to channel emotion into functional conversation. Words aren't having intended effect? Changem.

I would just like to educate some of you people on the effects of a Taser. Tasers send an electrical pulse into the body effecting the muscles. Most models operate at 50,000 volts and at approx 2-4 amps. It sounds like a lot but i know from personal experience that it only hurts for the 8-10 seconds that the device is active for. it is a perfectly safe way to gain compliance for law enforcement personnel. This is a tragic event that occurred with Adam and I wish his family the best. As for the officers they did their jobs as trained and there seems to be some unfortunate extenuating circumstances surrounding the event.

It is my opinion that if two Officers can't control a man who weighs 120 bls. without using a tazer gun on him they should go back and get in better shape. Everyone has their opinion about what happened to this man, but unless you knew him don't call him an idiot. I hope that the Family hires an attorney and an investigator to get to the truth.

The most common justification you'll see in comments of taser death articles in google news imply that the citizen who has died had a life that was somehow of lesser value. Obviously these outrageous statements declaring the deserved death of unarmed people are made without many facts and just a few days before the court date that would have sentenced them to death for whatever their crimes were. When you emotionally declare in a public forum that a fellow unarmed citizen was deserving of his death after an unfortunate incident like this, I would struggle to find the empathy for you if you had a bad day of your own. If your own inner struggle to admit to yourself of simple problems that need to be fixed are capable of dragging you down to the point where you'd devalue human life completely, please keep it off of the internet. Others not as creative at justifications as you, but with an equal amount of denial, will virally replicate your cowardly methods all over cyberspace. thanks

This debate is being mirrored in every US city, and with increased frequency as the incidents become almost commonplace. Whatever the problem is, it isn't going away or fixing itself. Citizens are expected to confront these types of problems in a republic-but it gets worse as every debate rages in pointless incendiary dialog like this. Search for 'taser' in google news and sample for yourself a few articles on similar incidents that have happened over the last few days across the US. (and the World) We all know that _all_ police aren't 'bad people' regardless of personal experiences with a bad-apple. Maybe emotions cloud logic because a penalty received after a minor infraction was too severe. Nobody, if they were forced to sit and evaluate their opinion, would be sure that cops are 'bad'. A judgement call on the character of every person of one occupation is ignorant and illogical. Likewise, it would be ignorant to think there isn't a problem here. This can be easily fixed.

I think the police are getting out of hand and the use of these electrical shock devices should be discontinued. You would not use a defibrillator on a perfectly healthy individual, why would you use it on someone other than when a cardiac condition requires it? These cops are not doctors - get a clue. I'm getting sick of reading about cops lilling people and they face no consequences. Incidents will increase because people will not wait to be killed - they will defend themselves.

Funny how all these folks are said to be the kindest, friendliest people you would ever want to meet (the guy who killed the three cops in a coffee shop, the young girl in the bus tunnel etc, etc) only to find out later that they are just thugs, druggies, or just stupid. I am sure we will find this idiot fits nicely into one of these catagories. The cops are not the problem, and if they happen to do a little cleaning of the gene pool in the performance of their job I thank them!

This is the same "gentle person" that attacked two Sultan police officers, breaking bones in one of them, damaging a police car and then kicking over a police motorcycle...what a pillar in the community. Regardless of his affliction, whether it was drug abuse, mental illness or both, it is unfortunate that he didn't get the help he needed, but this isn't the Deputies fault. They respond and react to behavior, if he attacked them, they aren't going to hug him into submission. Maybe you should walk a mile in another man's shoes before casting blame on him.

Really? Why are the cops ALWAYS the bad guys on this site? When I call 911, I want the biggest and baddest cop to show up at my doorstep. Mr Collier was obviously out of control, and the cops did what they were trained to do. Take him down with the least force available to them. Mr Collier's nine lives ran out. Not the cops' fault. Sister - where were you when your brother still had time to be saved? I can't tell you how tired I am of the media promoting the welfare of guys like this. I will guarantee you, when all the facts are reported, that Mr Collier was a total drain on society's dwindling resources. The police officers involved in this incident are not to blame here. Mr Collier lost his own life - he handed it over to the first people that night to call his bluff. Better than the other way around.

There needs to be laws governing the usages of tasers. They are obviously not as harmless as once thought. Because there are no laws on when to use tasers, these cops will go free without any consequence. They could have just tased him because they didn't like the way he was talking to them or didn't like the way he looked, or hell, everyone knows everyone out there, it could very well been just a personal issue. Yes, the cops out there know everyone personally, it's a small community. I find it hilarious that you people are going completely off the officers report, and believing it's the word of God himself. You people are what is wrong with today's justice system and why juries do not work. You people already go in there thinking someone is guilty without any physical proof other than a officers word.

I am completely beside myself from the way you people are talking about Adam. I went to school with this gentleman and he was nothing short of an amazing guy. He was very intelligent, and did very well in school as well as very charitable and helpful to all his peers. You people that make this sound like it was completely his fault are beyond sociopath like mentality. Just because you don't know him doesn't mean his life wasn't any more valid than yours. He had friends and family who loved him, and his death will impact many people for years to come. I grew up in Gold Bar and can tell you honestly that many of the officers out there have the "good ol boy attitude", and have no problem roughing up kids or adults and bending the the law in their favor. Adam was non aggressive, and responsible. Any "disturbance" cases are usually filed by old people who notice kids out in the park at night because there literally is nothing to do out in that town. The cops are crooks out there.

I guess all you liberal wackos would prefer that the police officers just sat and twiddled their thumbs until the dirt bag runs out of bullets or beats the crud out of them and takes their weapon. Police would not have to use this type of force if those involved had followed a few simple steps. When the police officer says stop, STOP. If he says jump, JUMP and the only question should be how high (question on asked after you start jumping). When he says to drop it drop it. Obey the officers commands and if the officers does do anything "wrong" or was out of line it can be taken care of using proper procedures later.

Was the man tased once or multiple times? Administering multiple, concurrent taser shots can be lethal. To a 25-year old man, it's highly questionable that a single taser shot would kill. Regardless, ever since Maurice Clemmons murdered the four officers in Lakewood, WA on 11/29/09, all Washington state police officers seem to have adopted a posture of shoot first, and ask questions later. That's a bad disposition for any law enforcement agency to have. I fear many more citizens will lose their lives unnecessarily because officers have become more focused on self-preservation. 6 police killings in the last 6 days; this is very disturbing trend.

If someone wants to fight the police and gets killed in the process, TOO BAD!!! Don't attack police officers. Also a Taser is considered "Less Lethal" but go ahead and take it away and see how lethal a .40 cal bullet is!!! A Taser is a additional tool to saves lives, most of teh time that is exactly what it does. Maybe you complainers, natives, and defenders of criminals rather have more dead police officers.

Hmmm... This is yet another grim statistic laid at the door of law enforcement. In the U.S. last year, there were about 94 police related uses of Taser equipment resulting in death. The statistics are higher when one adds other countries. The human body runs on electricity. When that delicate balance has a severe disruption, it can increase the human heartbeat by as much as 200 to 300 beats per minute. This can result in immediate cardiac arrest. Yeppp, Taser deployment can result in electrocution, so to speak, without the benefit of trial, jury, judge, reviews, appeals, etc. In some cases, Taser use is just some “street justice by cop” – all in the line of duty, of course; and the Taser use carefully defended by the police. More than likely, police agencies will have to reconsider the use of the Taser as part of their equipment. Eventually, there will be lawsuits decided in favor of very large monetary awards to the dead suspect’s family or relatives.
